The Scene – With the backed up cars of the home- and work-bound blocking the view, this mini-mall eatery is easy to miss. Once inside, though, the casual vibe is instantly disarming, with tables to the right illuminated by sunlight shining through plate glass or the glow of a game playing on the TV tucked above the sushi bar. Smaller parties sit to the left, where the din of conversation and the lighting are lower. – – The Food – Sashimi selections are exceptionally fresh but few, and cede most of the menu real estate to "Rockin' Sushi," baked and tempura rolls, and…

Rockin' sushi...in more ways than one

by TonySporano

I am a sushi snob and I can confidently say that Sushi Dan is the best sushi value in Los Angeles. The sushi is fantastic, the prices are reasonable, the service is exceptional, and the vibe is fun and energetic. It is not your authentic Japanese environment with strict sushi chefs and quiet, private tables. It is a fun, loud, party atmosphere with sushi chefs that appreciate a little (or a lot) sake, beer or soju.

The specials list is long but there are some real standouts. Sizzling Albacore Sashimi has sweet onions, garlic and jalapeno sauteed and poured over a healthy portion of albacore sashimi in ponzu sauce. Ask Octavio to make you an Amigo Jalapeno roll which includes yellowtail and tempura jalapeno wrapped in soy paper with rice and other goodies. Without a doubt, the best roll to get, and it's not on any menu there, is the Hot Nate Roll (not to be confused with Hot Night Roll or Hot Night Roll 2). The Hot Nate Roll is a decadent feast with spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and chopped jalapeno rolled up with yellowtail and avacado on top. It is served with spicy mayo and eel sauce in a constantly evolving presentation. Buy a bottle of Sake or beer for the sushi chefs and prepare to be the center of attention as they LOUDLY toast you and your generosity with shouts and cheers in various languages.
