In Short – The first Togo's opened in 1968 near California's San Jose State University, serving simple, sizeable sandwiches. Today, the same freshly prepared subs are ordered at the counter where diners choose their bread and toppings. Cold options include the signature avocado and turkey with all-white breast meat, and the Italian--salami, capicolla, mortadella, provolone and cotto. Popular hot subs include the pastrami, piled high with mustard. Veggie sandwiches, soups and salads round out the menu.

Togo's specializes in sandwiches, and they list their sandwich ingredients in two places: on a menu at the counter and on a sign behind the counter. The girl working behind the counter took my order, then proceeded to stare blankly at the ingredients layed out before her. She asked her co-worker how to make the sandwich, and then she made the wrong sandwich. The sandwich's name included two of its key ingerdients; both were omitted in her finished product. The seating was cramped (lunch rush) and the environment was crowded. Stay away from this Togo's!
- Pros: Ummm.... it's within walking distance?
- Cons: Just about everything else: mediocre food, terrible service, overcrowded environment
