The Scene
Never mind the no-frills ambience, snag a picnic table with a prime ocean view and gussy it up with a tablecloth, candles and B.Y.O.B. wine. A low-key crowd of wave-worn surfers, casual couples and penny-pinching families belly up to the counter to place their order, then kick back and enjoy the scenery.
The Food
It's worth braving the weekend lines at this eatery/fish market, where nearly every type of seafood is grilled, steamed or fried. Most diners gorge themselves on deep-fried seafood plates, with a choice of batter-fried cod, shrimp, scallops, oysters and clam strips, served with thumb-thick french fries. But steamed shellfish gives rival fish shack Neptune's Net a run for its money. Simply prepared, the pure, unadorned flavors burst, like sweet Maine lobster, peel-and-eat shrimp and green-lipped mussels bobbing in a delicate broth. Grilled fish, such as ahi, salmon and swordfish, prepared with the same straightforward style, are equally successful.

If you appreciate fresh seafood, you'll appreciate Malibu Seafood, if you want a fancy 5 star chef/restaurant go down the street. They are 1st a fish market, they sell fresh fish straight from the docks - order the fresh fish. That's why they're there. They started cooking the stuff they sell, then they give you a picnic table to eat it at. When the crab is in, buy it. It's grand. Their rice pilaf makes a great addition to the crab, the lobster. Just like the fancy restaurants, you can pick the lobster you want. I think people expect a 5 star chef because it's in malibu. Not here. It's a fish market. Understand that, you'll understand the appeal. It's good, fresh fish. It's that simple. That's why there's a line.

I can't for the life of me understand why this place has such a great reputation. The food is totally average & greasy seafood. The prices are high when compared to the portions & the lines are atrocious. This is just one of those places that gets a good reputation for no real reason & people just feel like they have to say it's good because everyone else thinks so. Totally average food with decent views of the ocean, if that's your thing.

This is a great stop-in for lunch on a beach day. The food is always consistent and what they lack in variety they make up for in freshness. I've been several times and have never been disappointed. If you go during the lunch or dinner rush, you can expect to wait a while, but with nice picnic-style open seating and good views of Zuma beach there's plenty to occupy your time. Their lot is definitely small, and I would recommend just grabbing a free parking spot along PCH, but other than that a good place with great views that won't make your wallet suffer.
