Tips for Original Pancake House

June 20, 2008

Made-to-order breakfasts---including over a dozen unique flapjacks---stack the odds in this restaurant's favor.. In Short
Founded in Oregon circa 1953, this simply-furnished spot owes its success to its creative menu and fresh ingredients. Batters are made on the premises; a special "sourdough starter" keeps treats from tasting overly sweet. Patrons choose from eggs, waffles, crepes and oven-baked omelets, as well as signature plates like blueberry pancakes (served with or without compote), giant cinnamon-glazed apple pancakes, thin and chewy "49-ers" and the air-filled, lemon-and-sugar-topped "Dutch Baby."

Best apple pancakes!. Absolutely amazing apple pancakes! They are huge and dripping with cinnamon and sugar... You have to try them!

this is not part of the IHOP chain! its 100 times better. Ive been going to this place since I was a kid--it was a big treat then, and its a big treat to go there now. I always get the strawberry French crepes--everything about it is delicious, down to the strawberry syrup. I've gotten their famous baked Dutch Baby--its huge and really good. Their breakfast combos are also a good deal.

Check the local paper (Redondo Beach's Easy Reader, etc.)--I think they still run weekday coupons for this place in there.

Plan on going early on Sundays and weekends to beat the church crowd.

Kids, kids, kids!. Like every great breakfast place, the OPH is always crowded on the weekends, but well worth it. Although there are always a lot of kids around, they sort of add to the very casual ambience. I've been going there for years and continue to be impressed with the quality and service. And make a point of trying anything with strawberries when they are fresh and in season, and tasting the homemade tropical syrup.
