Editorial Review for Abbot's Habit – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Surfers, artists, writers and dot-comers congregate in this bright corner space, where the art on the walls is for sale and open-mic nights are a frequent occurrence. Aside from the notably strong coffee, the cafe sells pastries and baked goods from a number of local bakeries: blueberry scones, coffee cake, cinnamon sugar buns, banana-tofu muffins and chocolate Krispie treats are usually on hand. Deli sandwiches and Italian subs are made to order.

I've always wanted to visit this cafe, and finally I did. Maybe its better days are behind us, because the service was terrible and my sandwich was expensive and not a good value for the money. It was just okay. I've gotten better sandwiches from Fresh and Easy for half the price. The girl helping me behind the counter couldn't wake up long enough to answer questions about the menu and had to ask people (who had to ask people). And this was just about the types of bread! Nobody seemed all that happy to be there, and they could definitely have cared less about my experience. And, the restroom was filthy. I won't go back.
Pros: Greap people watching
Cons: Terrible food and service

I am a Venice local (two years), and this is my review: Abbot's is, by far, the most fun place to hang out on the Westside. Grab a table inside, and you're surrounded by Venice locals (i.e., surfers, artists, actors, and generally very cool people). Most days, one of the incredibly talented staff will be playing the piano they've got inside (talk about ambiance!). Or, opt to sit outside, and you're in for some of the best people watching in all of Venice! And you're bound to get sucked into a great conversation with all of the very socially and politically intelligent people who frequent this Venice hotspot. The staff at Abbot's awesome. They work hard, day in and day out, to make Abbot's the most inviting little cafe on the Westside - and they consistently succeed. Their fearless leader (you'll recognize him by his long, dirty blond hair and his laidback, beachy attitude) is one of the nicest guys you'll ever want to meet. All in all, I highly recommend Abbot's Habit - for breakfast, lunch, or a light dinner. The food is fantastic (really unique sandwiches, pastries, soups and salads), the coffee and tea is tasty hot - but the real story is the atmosphere. A true Venice social scene, frequented by genuinely nice, interesting and intelligent people - you can't say that about some of the new, trendy cafes down the street.
Pros: Free parking, great ambience, tasty food, friendly service
Cons: Can get crowded over lunch and on the weekends, only open till 10pm
