Venice Beach House

National Register of Historic Places

  • Historic Landmark, built 1911
  • 9 unique and distinctive rooms
  • Less than a block from beach

. . . A dreamer named Abbot Kinney bought a few miles of marshland on the coast near Los Angeles. While Los Angeles politely smiled at "Kinney's Folly", the dreamer and his thousand man army of union workers began dredging canals ...They built boardwalks, and walking boulevards . . .a grand pier and a bathhouse. Abbot Kinney opened his Venice of America just in time for the Fourth of July, 1905. Artists, celebrities, and honeymooners from all over the world have embraced this romantic beach community ever since. Many were so moved by this utopian community that they built their homes along Venice Beach.

One of those homes was The Venice Beach House. Built in 1911, this bed-and-breakfast features nine charming suites, attentive hosts, a garden and a library. Because it is located just one block away from the famed Venice beach, activities are limitless.

Editorial Review for Venice Beach House – by Kelle Schillaci

The Scene
It's a rustic, modest bungalow hidden away on a quiet (for Venice, at least) side street. No grand lobby or concierge, but there's a cozy patio and an attentive innkeeper. A plaque declaring the inn's history hangs in a delightful little garden, proudly announcing its origins in the 1910s. Memorabilia marking highlights in Venice history can be found throughout.

The Details

Every room is unique and many pay tribute to famous former guests. The Aimee McPherson room boasts a private entrance and fully stocked library (McPherson was a famed L.A. evangelist back in the day when preachers were as popular as rock stars). Exposed pine beams highlight the Tramp's Quarters, named for Charlie Chaplin, who was known to frequent Venice lodgings regularly. Complimentary breakfast, antique appointments in every room.

My house was being remodeled and a friend suggested the Venice Beach House. I called and was helped by a friendy woman on the phone. When i arrived I was amazed. I have lived in Venice for 12 years and never knew this charming place was here. It was fantastic. My four days were wonderful. The location was perfect and the staff was so friendly. They called me by my name. (more then i ever got at a famous chain hotel i usually stay at) All in all i now make sure my out of town visitors stay at the Venice Beach House.

Pros: location, price, service
