Editorial Review for Tattoo Asylum – by Nicolas Rabinovich
In Short
Located just off the main beach promenade, this popular studio is designed like a rock-n-roll emporium--complete with mock silver metal walls and loud metal music blasting. Because it's a custom shop, the artists whip out their Sharpies and sketch right on your skin. Don't be distracted by the bolt through your artist's nose, all inkers have at least 5 years of experience. The starting price for a tattoo is $50-90, but the extra cash goes to making the experience friendly, safe and private.
Hits: The artists clean their instruments in front of the client, which really makes the customer feel safe.
Misses: The metal music is so loud it almost takes the pain of the new tattoo away.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasThat doesn't look like my mom! Any fades or discoloration in your tattoo can be re-inked for free if you come back within two weeks of the original procedure.
Know Before You GoRates depend on the artist's discretion. Different inkers charge different amounts for the same tattoo and some may even be open to bargaining.

I went in with my ideas and let Robert fill in the blanks. He really listened to me and put my ideas down on paper. We came up with a beautiful design and his technique made it less painful. He was very friendly and made me feel very comfortable. Even though the shop is very close to the Venice boardwalk it does not have that touristy feel about it. Excellent experience from start to finish. I highly recommend this shop and will be going back for more work very very soon.
Pros: parking, staff, service, nice atmosphere, professional

I was incredibly please with this shop. My friends and I came in on a Sunday and the place was packed! There were only 2 artists working, Nick and Lucky, and 2 people up front. The staff was very energetic and very welcoming. I wasn't exactly sure of what I wanted, I just had an idea. I let the staff upfront in on my thoughts and ideas. There was no internet so the girl that was helping me went to Quiznos around and borrowed their computer to print out a few pictures for my friends and I. All 4 of us got tattooed. Nick did the 3 small ones and Lucky did my semi-big (well at least to me) tattoo along my ribs. Even though we had to wait a bit due to the fact that there were only 2 artists, I still enjoyed being there. Everyone made us feel comfortable and wanted. I would HIGHLY recommend this establishment to anyone visiting Venice Beach. I know the locals already know what's up! I took the time to find a little more information on my artist and found him on myspace.... here is his url: Check out his work and make an appointment: MySpace URL: luckytattooasylum I hope this information has made it easier for you to find a decent tattoo shop in Venice.
