The Scene – This small gourmet grocery store has been one of Santa Monica's most revered institutions since 1925. Aisles are filled with almost every kind of Italian cookie, coffee, high-quality olive oil and cheese imaginable. But it's the sandwiches that lead to the ever-long line of locals mobbing the deli counter. Outside picnic table are usually filled with those who can't wait to devour a sub. – – The Goods – Find everything for an Italian feast at home: hot specialties like lasagna, fresh salads, wines and whole loaves of thick, crusty bread hot from the oven.…

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
If you want a hot loaf of bread and it's not in the baskets by the cheese counter, ask the guys behind the deli when the next batch will be out.
Parking:
The lot is one-way coming in from Lincoln. You need to exit through the alley behind the store.

  1. getting those great sandwhices is a hassel because first you have to hunt down and fight for a parking spot, then you gotta wait approx.
  2. The only reason I'm not giving Bay Cities a perfect 10 ranking is that if you go in during peaks hours (which seems to be about 11:30am to 2:30pm, as far as I can tell), parking is a nightmare and you have to take a number at the deli counter and wait for
  3. The checkout lines during lunch hours are unbelievable and parking can be a huge hassle, but the food makes it all worth while.

Italian staples and better-call-ahead sandwiches!

by The LA Gourmet at Citysearch

Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery has been a Santa Monica establishment since it first opened its doors in 1925. Although it sells everything from kitchen supplies to Asian ingredients, Bay Cities is known for its variety of Italian staples (both imported and domestic). It offers over two dozen kinds of DeCecco pasta and enough pannetone to build a house. It also features an impressive selection of international cheeses and wines.

And, did we mention its incredible array of freshly made sandwiches, salads, and other prepared deli favorites? We love the Godmother Sandwich and Marinated Artichokes. Order your food for home or for immediate consumption on the patio. The line at the deli counter can be up to 15 minutes long but the food is well worth the wait. You can also place your order online and pick it up at the side counter.
