Editorial Review for Real Food Daily – by Natasha Rubin
The Scene
This gourmet organic vegetarian haven is always packed with both New-Age, wheat-grass fiends and regular folk who strive to treat their bodies like temples at least one day a week.
The Food
Where else can a vegetarian eat a Reuben sandwich? Okay, so it's soy, not corned beef, but the marinade adds a tangy zip that complements the pungent sauerkraut perfectly. Much of the menu features "simulated" meat dishes, with soy and whole grains replacing animal products, and nearly all are surprisingly flavorful due to the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients. The Salisbury seitan is joined by creamy mashed potatoes and savory gravy. Unless your doctor has you on a cud-only diet, though, avoid the spring rolls--two gigantic logs of sprouts stuffed into rice flour wrappers.

I've heard about Real Food Daily a number of times from co-workers and friends, vegans and non-vegans and felt that it was time to make a foray into the meatless world. Light wood colored and minimalist dining room greeted us today and luckily it wasn't crowded as we were seated promptly. I had the spring rolls, and my two companions had the salisbury seitan and the stir fry veges. I gotta say, as a die hard meat eater, I was definitely impressed by the flavors that were presented. Texturely you can tell the food isn't true meat, duh, but the flavors more than make up for that. My friend's seitan had a great tasting gravy with the wheat meat slices and mashed potatoes. The stir fry was tasty as well and the spring rolls were a little on the sloppy side. Not wrapped as well as it should've been. Hearty portions as well make this place a definite recommendation.
Pros: Surprisingly good flavors, healthy organic food.
Cons: There's no meat...malnourished vegans at next table makes me wanna rub them with a steak

I have given this restaurant ample opportunity to change my mind over the last 5 years, but I've finally given up. I have a friend who is Vegan, so we go to RFD Santa Monica every time she visits, and each time I say, "Never again." But, time goes on, and I decide to give them another chance. This last one was it for me. The staff are so contemptuous, it's enough to put you off your over priced food. The pretentious attitudes are enough, but it gets even worse when you order Nachos and Cheese and are charged $11, even if you have the 'audacity' to ask for no pico or guac on the side. Then, when we received our nachos, the extremely small amount of cheese ( I'm talking ONE tablespoons worth on a plate of chips) was cold, and the 5 nachosthat had cheese on them were then soggy. I am at a loss at to how a restuarant that does this stays in business. Please save your money and your positive energy and go somewhere that will give you a decent amount of food for your money, and a smile!
Cons: Rude, contemptuous staff. Very small amount of food for very large amount of money
