Editorial Review for Magicopolis – by Dan Pasquini

In Short
There's something about seeing a live magic show that doesn't come across on television. Knowing that a magician, not the cameras, is doing the trick. But even in the cozy confines of Magicopolis, figuring out the trick doesn't get any easier--a credit to the lineup of performers here, all of whom are first-rate. Owner-magician Steve Spill is a star in his own right.

When to Go

Keep in mind that Saturday afternoon is birthday-party central, but there's nothing like a slick legerdemain to keep the rambunctious kids hushed.

I took my family to Magicopolis last summer (my daughter is at USC), and it was truly a blast. My kids range from 8 to 18 and they all enjoyed it immensely. The show was hilarious - with a capital H - in addition to being great magic. Afterwards the stars came out into the audience and visited with everyone. It was a great family experience. We would definitely go again next time we're in Santa Monica. My only complaint is that the show is not on DVD so we could take it home with us!

Pros: Great theater

Magicopolis has taken the stuffing out of stuffy magicians, the show was better than the one I saw at the Monte Carlo in Vegas and nobody wore a tuxedo. I know nothing about magic, I was nonetheless confident that I could figure it all out, in Vegas I sat about a mile away from the stage but could still see how many of the tricks worked. At Magicopolis, the magician, who looked like Frank Zappa, wasn't going to get away with anything while I sat in the very front row, focused in on his every move. Wrong. That hippie magician hornswoggled me. He read my mind, made a pretty girl appear, disappear, and levitated her in the air while passing a hula hoop around her as she floated in space. The guy also survived having a ton of steel spikes dropped on him. My girlfriend and I walked out of Magicopolis totally entertained.

Pros: Great for family

Cons: parking
