Editorial Review for Marix Tex Mex Playa – by Kelle Schillaci

The Scene
Come happy hour, Marix fills with thrill-seeking locals seeking potent margaritas and spicy dishes--and not just of the gastronomic variety. Each wood-trimmed cantina offers a decidedly different kind of action. The Santa Monica locale keeps a casual beach vibe, while the West Hollywood site jumps and bumps with a mostly gay clientele and a constant techno beat--even during Sunday brunch.

The Food
Offset the Kick Ass margarita buzz with a lime-drenched seviche "cocktail" or guacamole appetizer. Entree options range from typical Mexican fare (tostadas, enchiladas, tacos, burritos) to "Tex"-inspired--jalapeno-spiced meat dishes served with hefty portions of garlic mashed potatoes. If you don't mind a little head-turning attention, try the popular Sizzling Fajitas: a searing and aromatic platter of either beef, chicken, veggies, shrimp or swordfish accompanied by heaping mounds of beans, rice, cheese and sour cream. Soothe the chipotle burn with a brownie sundae for dessert.

I can hardly believe this place is only a couple blocks from the beach. I'm so used to Santa Monica being over-expensive and over-crowded, that I was really expecting to be disappointed at Marix. We were seated immediately, the food was well above average, the prices were great (2 item combo for $8.95) and the staff was pretty friendly (though they didn't actually provide good service -- you had to chase them down for another beer and they never brought more hot sauce, even after several requests. All-around great experience, though. Will definitely go again.

Pros: decent parking, prices, friendly environment

Cons: slow service, ambivalent waitstaff, lame salsa
