Editorial Review for Le Marmiton – by Lesley Balla
The Scene
Tucked between high-end Santa Monica shops, this double-wide storefront is chock-full of homey art, wines, cheeses and other French goodies. Neighborhood locals swarm the bakery for breads, take-and-bake meals and cafe lattes. The cozy dining room, painted like a walled garden with plant tendrils and flowers peeking over yellow walls, fills fast with shoppers from the strip. French-accented servers bustle about, their charm never waning even if their service sometimes does.
The Food
Reasonably priced rustic French fare, such as homemade pates, fresh salads and hearty soups, are perfect for lunch or a light meal. Steamed green-lip mussels are best with piquant Provencal sauce and a plate of crispy golden fries and specials include traditional dishes like cassoulet. On occasion, the menu features a chocolate souffle served piping-hot with a plate of freshly whipped cream.

I met a friend for lunch here on January 4th--we thought it would be a slow week and in fact, it wasn't overly busy, but the staff seemed to think they were still on vacation. Three waitresses were "on duty," though I use the term loosely. We were served at various times by all three since none of them seemed to take responsibility for our table. One of them sat outside for at least 15 minutes with a table of male guests until one of her co-workers signaled for her to come in and help, which she did with a roll of her eyes. Another waitress had an ongoing conversation over the course of our meal with two middle-aged gentlemen sitting next to us regarding some vitamin drink powder they had given her. We kept having to flag down a waitress instead of having them come to us--and this was for the most basic help such as taking our order, bringing forgotten drinks, preparing our bill, and so on. Because the responsibility of waiting on us was divided among them, they made mistake upon mistake. We had to explain three times how to divide up our bill. On top of everything else, my Marmiton salad had lox on it that was dried out around the edges--as if it had been made ahead and not covered properly. Because I was trying to focus on my friend and our visit, I didn't want to make a scene, but I was furious at having to pay for being ignored, passed around, and served sub-par food. It was such deplorable service that it detracted from my visit with my friend. I was so angry when I left that I wanted to call the manager to give him/her an earful. I thought better of it, however, and decided this approach would reach the people who most needed to know about it--prospective customers!
Cons: Service, size of tables, noise
