Used to be great – I feel like I've lost an old friend. I had been going to Noma since I moved to LA about ten years ago for their great food and low-key atmosphere. It all changed under the new ownership. Traditional feel is gone, food is sub-par (although in all fairness the fish was fresh last time we went). My wife and I are now looking for a new sushi place.
Big Disappointment – For years and years Noma was a neighborhood treasure. I recently went back after more than a year away. The remodel is ok, but the sushi bar is too low. More importantly, the food is almost unrecognizable. The new menu's boring (how many ways can you do a California Role). The edemame was oily and lukewarm, our regular order of Yellowtail was disappointing and the spicy role we ordered wasn't edible. Noma used to be consistently fresh, tasty and imaginative. I won't be going back.
Delicious sushi – I take my family here often and we are rarely disappointed. The sushi is delicious and my son can't get enough of the shrimp tempura. The teriyaki chicken and steak are both sweet and tender. I can't say I'm a foodie. I am satisfied if my kids eat and I don't fall down when reading the bill. Noma meets my need.
look no further, but look hard... – This place has been around forever, but unless you're looking for it, you'll probably drive right past it. I've been on a mission to find the best and freshest no frills sushi place, and the search is over! I could eat sushi for every meal, everyday, but have an issue spending $80 on lunch like at most other restaurants. SO - if you're on a date or looking for ambience - go to Roku or Katsu-ya, but if you're looking for serious fresh, delicious sushi for s verrrryyy good price, you must try this place.
Great sushi, Lovely Service. Highly Recommended! – Noma has great sushi and sashimi. Try the salmon sashimi and the fresh water eel sushi. They're a bit pricy but nothing that the quality can't justify. The lunch/dinner sets are average but are good value for money. They have extremely friendly staff and great service. The restaurant itself is a bit small and reservations are highly recommended, especially for booth seats. Lovely setting.
Best Sushi in Santa Monica! – Be sure to sit at the sushi bar and let the sushi chef know your likes/dislikes. They love to be creative when given the chance and make exceptional plates (in both presentation and flavors.) It might not have the "hype" or "atmosphere" of other sushi restaurants but you can't beat the quality of thier sushi. I know that when I move out of LA, I'll miss Noma most of all...
Always Good – Noma has the most consistent sushi. Always good, never bad. I like their Chilean seabass, ask them if it is fresh or frozen, fresh is better. There are better sushi places in LA, but when you are in Santa Monica and want a good meal, Noma is a safe bet.
Great neighborhood find! – Oh my god, I couldn't disagree with the previous poster more. Noma serves incredible sushi, especially the yellowtail, sweet shrimp and scallops. It's one of those places my husband and I can always count on for a great meal. Even when it's really crowded, food comes out quick and tasty. Try it. You won't be disappointed.
SO BAD – Just terrible. Table was dirty when waitress brought us to it. Sushi was aweful, seemed old and poorly cut. Tofu in miso seemed old. Veggies for tempura were not fresh and batter was too heavy, sauce was way watered down. The service was bad, they kept taking plates without asking. It was very hot and loud. The meal ended perfectly with the discovery that my fortune cookie (in a japanese resturant??) was stale. Stay away from this one.
