One of the best brunch finds on the westside – The menu is anything but bland, incorporating plenty of breakfast staples with an original twist. Patrons are constantly craning their necks to see what's piled on the plates coming out of the kitchen.
You're lucky if you snag a booth, otherwise you might get seated at one of the tables that are a lil too close together. Makes for great eavesdropping, but not so much an intimate meal.
Greek omelet, California omelet, eggs benedict and fresh basil scramble are all tempting.
The gourmet sausages are worth ordering - maple sausage is sweet and savory; the spicy cajun andouille has just enough kick.
More seating, same great breakfasts. – Better than Snug Harbor, which is right down the street. They have dealt with what used to be a long weight problem by placing two rows of tables in the second-storefront they acquired two or so years ago. They were using all this space for a leather sofa waiting area, but they have kept the sofas but pushed them away from the front to improve the amount of seating.
Bad service, bad food – I've been here for breakfast before and enjoyed it. Today my boyfriend and I decided to have lunch and it was a thoroughly bad experience.
First, I noted when I went to the bathroom the crates of boxes of Krusteaz pancaked mix in the back. If I wanted Krusteaz pancakes I'd make them at home. I was disappointed to discover that's how B&P makes their pancakes.
Second, the service throughout the meal was horrible. I'm not sure which guy was even our waiter and they all seemed to be doubling as table washers and waiters. I ordered Diet Coke and was given a glass of Coke. When I asked to have it replaced, the waiter didn't say anything and turned away. Later I was brought a can of Diet Coke by someone else.
My boyfriend ordered salmon for lunch and when it came out it was completely overcooked. It was covered in white on the top - an indicator of being overcooked. He tried to eat it but it was horrible and he sent it back. The next piece they sent out was also overcooked, but not as badly so he ate that one. I had a goat cheese chicken salad and the dressing had zero flavor and the tomatoes were mushy and flavorless as well. It was disappointing all around.
Bread and Porridge makes itself out to be a cozy original restaurant, but really it seems like an overpriced diner to me with nothing special to offer on the menu, making pancakes from box mix, and cooks who aren't versed in preparing the foods properly. The wait staff is completely inattentive, as well.
This place is a joke. $10 for two pancakes? Haha! – Some friends and I had brunch here on Sunday. What a joke. A B rating, a long wait, everything is at least 50% over priced, and it's just average at best. Service? You get your order taken and your check handed to you. Yep, that's worth 20%. We spent $60 (included tax and tip) on pancakes. And my girlfriend and I just had water. Had we had something to drink we would have been approaching $70. Haha! I'll never be back and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Buzzing by day and Relaxing at Night – Quite a place! A smallish venue, but the size of the menu packs a wallop. Stylish but a little old-school is how I describe Bread and Porridge. I've eaten here more than a few times. Yes, the dining room small, but the size of the menu makes up for that. I was there again last weekend and had their meatloaf. It is excellent ? not too much beef and not too much filling, just right! My friend had the halibut, and she loved it and especially the well finished vegetable sides. The waiters were friendly and there isn?t a rush like in the daytime. Dessert was a fresh blueberry tart ala mode which we shared and then we finished off with a couple of their cappuccinos served French style in bowls ? very cool (in the cushy sofas next door ). Definitely my favorite spot on the Westside for a relaxed dinner with wine. And don?t miss out on the breakfast fixins -- but do expect to cool your heels in their lounge room for a while since there is usually a wait for breakfast.
Good wine selection and a great value – Now one of my favorite lunch & breakfast places is serving dinner. It's a quieter scene at night, and the wines are surprisingly good.
This place cranks out hearty tastes ? like the barbeque which I had with their Zin and the beefstew which I washed down with a Cab on my second trip back for dinner with a date. She had their grilled wild salmon with Byron Merlot which I think was just 6 bucks a glass.
Like the place, the wine list is small, but good selections. You can have a total white table cloth dinner experience for two for under 50 bucks including a bottle of real good vino.
It has potential – I have mixed emotions on this place... First of all let me just say it is definately over priced. The menue is pretty extensive, and really got my hopes up high, but I was let down. I oredered the eggs benidict--the yokes were cooked through- and I think for eggs benidict lovers out there that is all I really need to say. My friend got an omelet, and I was not stoked on how they don't mix the ingrediants in with the eggs. On the other hand all the pancake dishes looed great. The one plus was the cute little sides of salsa and black beans they served with breakfast. Would I go there again? Yes, but not if I was paying!
Cozy brunch nook dishes out plentiful portions and a country-kitchen vibe in Santa Monica. – In Short
Vintage orchard-crate artwork, bright-red wainscoting and the sounds of country crooners fill this tiny 12-table diner. The ample lunch menu offers salads big enough for two and dinner is also served, but breakfast is the main draw here. Served all day, whopping omelettes are stuffed with everything from feta and spinach to spicy chicken sausage. Five varieties of pancakes, including the popular blueberry, are dished up in short and tall stacks and for a little extra, with pure maple syrup.
I would eat here again. – I would not say it is to die for, but this place is pretty good. Their fish tacos were surprisingly good. My boyfriend enjoyed his pancakes, though I did not care much for them. Our friend had a decent looking salad. This place was super crowded on the weekend. The staff was nice and attentive.
Average food, strangely attentive staff – I'm forever scouring Los Angeles for new places to dine. I decided to try my luck at Bread & Porridge. I wasn't terribly disappointed and I wasn't completely blown away either. The food is average. I had the blueberry pancakes which would have been wonderful except they were completely saturated with blueberries. The pancake itself was nice, although I wasn't able to eat too much of it. My partner had the french toast and agreed that it was "just o.k." - like me, she was disappointed, but she wasn't thrilled either. I really liked their choice of thick, smoked bacon - hearty and very tasty. The way I judge a restaurant is whether or not I feel I can prepare a better meal at home - in this case, I knew that I could've done a better job at home. What was strange about the experience was the waitstaff -- we had all 5 waiters come to check on us, all within a few seconds of one another. We chalked this up to the novelty of seeing a couple of "domestic partners'" (apparently the "L" word is considered inappropriate on citysearch) one of whom is tattooed heavily and pierced...it wasn't off-putting because they were extremely nice, it was just a little weird. So, for attentive waitstaff, I'd give them a 10. The food definitely rated a 5 on my scale.
