Editorial Review for Co-opportunity – by Jordana Brown

The Scene
Back in the '70s, when life was more cooperative, a group of four men opened the co-op in a garage in Santa Monica, basing their new venture on a Canadian model of group-run businesses. Today, things are a bit more standardized, though it's still possible to buy a membership, which gets you a three-percent discount on all items in the store, and 10 percent off during monthly membership appreciation days. Non-members are also welcome.

The Goods
This place stocks the shelves with the typical whole-foods, organic, health food stuff. There's also a deli section filled with freshly made hot foods (both vegetarian and carnivorous, but all organic and hormone-free), a large cruelty-free cosmetics section and massages offered by a licensed practitioner. There's a monthly calendar of free off-site health and well-being classes. Check the store schedule for times and topics.

Like and support the idea, but the set-up isnt as nice and clean and inspiring as wholefoods or trader joes. lots of raw produce. kombucha. nuts. flax seeds and the sort. health hippies might find it cool, but its a bit expensive for my taste.

Great little market. Has quite a few hard to find items in the general store. The deli has some wonderful healthy food but the service can be slow and sometime rude.. but still worth the abuse.

Pros: good veg, good deli

Cons: can be hard to park, rude service
