great food, best oaxacans, favorite chicken enchiladas, wonderful nofrills oaxacan restaurant, favorite black mole, great big price tag, bad diner
Rightly voted among LA's Best Oaxacans by LA Weekly.
After a recent refurb and with new management and a new expanded menu, El Texate has regained its reputation as a good, no-frills Oaxacan restaurant. It has retained its unique, whimsical atmosphere, and the food is varied and excellent. Excellent service, too. We live in the neighborhood, have been there several times, and are always happy to return.
LA WEEKLY also voted El Texate among LA's Best Oaxacans this week with the following review: "And often overlooked is El Texate, a beachy Oaxacan joint near the Santa Monica Civic, which is perhaps a bit less refined than some of the other choices, but has most of the pertinent moles as well as some dishes hard to find elsewhere in town, including a squash-blossom salad and igadito, the Oaxacan equivalent of matzoh ball soup." Well deserved.
Overall Good. My sister and I ate heartily during happy hour and the bill was only 24 bucks. They have $4 Margaritas and $2 tacos. I particularly enjoyed the margarita because it is served in a taller glass than regular margaritas. The actual restaurant is a little rough around the edges, but I thought it was okay because it looked family owned.
You shouldn't wait for your meal for 45 minutes!!. If you are driving down Pico and you see El Texate restaurant please don't bother! My boyfriend and I had the worse service and experience there last night. I completely understand that sometimes you might wait for your food a bit longer if it is extremely busy, but not for 45 minutes! when there is only five customers in the the restaurant. The guacamole that was $6.99 was NOT guacamole, it was just an avocado cut into pieces. The carne asada that I had was the worse meat I have ever had in my entire life. We weren't the only clients that felt this way the other family was very upset and dissatisfied with the service the food, and the amount of time that they waited for their meal. I hope that this review will escape you from waisting your time and money.
Great Chicken Enchiladas de Coloradito. My friend and we decided to tryout El Texate after reading the reviews and to our surprise the place was packed. We waited to be seated and the after ordering we came to the conclusion that the wait was worthwhile since it's a restaurant not a fast food place. It was all worth it the chicken enchiladas were my favorite they have different moles but the one I loved was coloradito. We also tried the flauta plate and to drink we had margaritas and the rice drink which we enjoyed as well. GREAT FOOD and SERVICE.
Cute place, not so cute food. El Texate looked like an "ok" place from the outside. It appeared to be family run, and the atmosphere looked inviting. I ordered enchiladas mole, supposedly made with hand-made tortillas. It took forever (over 30 minutes) to procure dinner, and when it arrived, it was soooo disappointing. I noticed that someone else on this website thought that El Texate's was the best mole. I have to sternly disagree, or maybe it was just an off night. Frankly, the enchiladas tasted like they were made with feet, not hands. The meat inside was grisly and tasted like the low-end quality of meat you'd get in a bad diner. The rice was actually the only good thing about the meal, but if I wanted rice, I'd have gone to a sushi bar. Their salsa was also very mediocre. I hate to bash places that look like mom and pop establishments, but this place would place dead last in a race with my pop's favorite family run Mexican restaurant which is in another part of the state. I would avoid this place at all costs. To be frank, I think you get better taste from Taco Bell.
Overall good, but.... My husband and I decided to check out El Texate after seeing an ad in the Weekly for $2.75 margaritas on Sundays from 2-6pm. We got there around 5 pm on a Sunday, the place was cute, but completely deserted. Dinner was fine, the service was fine (I agree about the bathroom being slightly scary), but when the bill came, our 4 margaritas were charged at $25. I paid the bill without dispute, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth. If you run a promotion, then honor it without expecting patrons to produce coupons or allude to the large bannor outside, or otherwise jump through hoops. If you want to charge full price for your drinks, fine, just don't advertise otherwise.
Great Mole. Every time I eat here, I get the same thing- the enchiladas de mole negro. Not because the other menu items aren't delicious- I steal things off my friend's plates too- but these enchiladas are just that good. I get the pork, but they also come with chicken or cheese, the mole is dark and smoky and wonderful. I am also a fan of their rice, which I usually leave on the plate in most restaurants- but theirs is very tasty. Sure, the tv can be too loud, and for some reason lately the lights in the bar are way too bright, but these things are made up for by the enchiladas!!
Good, Oxacan-style Mexican food. Very good mole and other Oxacan Mexican foods. You will find some standard Mexican dishes but expect some that are fairly eclectic and very typical of the state of Oaxaca. My favorite is the black mole, it is very, very rich and probably an aquired taste judging by my friend's reactions. Nothing fancy here, TV sometimes on a little too loud, but that's not much of an issue.
Nothing Fancy, just great food. Near the beach and really good food. That's really all you need. There is always plenty of tables available and you can usually even sit outside if you want. The service is just fine- as this restaurant is really about the food. Try the flautas- always a good choice. You can get a great meal without a great big price tag- and enjoy the ocean air as you dine.
