view & uploadnot bad sandwiches, great food, ultimately rude staff, best homemade soups, bad service, like im, cold fifty percent
Best homemade soups. I am so happy to have discovered this place. They make the best homemade soups and sandwiches. There is only one soup special a day which is nice because you know it is really fresh and homemade - and it is usually vegetarian - you can tell they are all made with love. Great sandwiches too. Friendly service and the owner/chef is a really good guy. Not a lot of authentic places like this in LA.
definitely will try!. i go to santa monica a lot because i love the environment! after reading some of the reviews, im definitely going to try shoop's! im like drooling right now...!!!!
I daydream over the sandwiches. I love the couple that run this place! Matt & LLonna keep a well stocked deli counter in the middle of the shop with gourmet dry goods in the back and my favorite part, the small open kitchen and eating area on the street front. The place gets busy - that's just another reason I like it - they go through the inventory so quickly everything is always super fresh. You've got to meet Matt - I've always been spoiled there, and with his attention to detail I don't have to worry about what's been properly cleaned or prepared - everything is and always. Mise en place.
Friendly, local eatery. Great staff, Great food.. Firstly, I don't understand other reviewers complaints about the pricing at Shoops. Their pricing is no worse than that of other LA restaurants and in fact is less than what we're used to. We love the staff. They are always so accommodating, funny, and glad to see us (we stop in once a month or at least try to). Love the food and the store in the back that carries good European treats and food. Only con is that in a 'mom and pop' fashion they only accept cash and we like to use our credit card to get the points - but it doesn't keep us from going there for a good breakfast.
I live two blocks away from Shoop's and refuse to eat there..
The service is poor. Meaning, your food may be sitting on a counter way too long. And you may not be offered a coffee refill until you ask for your bill. The food servings are inconsistent. For example, you and your company may order the same dish as you. However, one of may end up with a third of the size portions as the others-in a bad way. Plus, the food is cold fifty percent of the time... And after you get your plate back from having it 'reheated'-the other portion of your meal is cold and 'they can't be bothered'.
They seem to be the only Euro Deli on main street around my pad. Still, I prefer to walk a few blocks to the 3rd street promenade to spend my money and time wisely. I have had numerous bad experiences at this place for years... Again, I am a local. And I have eaten at almost every place here on main street. So, I try to keep an open mind and give business' another try when i'm burned out on my usual restaurants. After five years of trying, I've retired from eating at shoop's. I've been far more than patient.
Over-priced, bad service, welcome to the Stone Age. If you like living in the 70's you'll love this restaurant. You can't bring your credit card, so you better have cash. So once you've added your ATM charge (2 blocks away for a working ATM) to the overpriced sandwiches, you can also be patronized by a staff that is ultimately rude. Their solution to not having services all restaurants provide? Don't come back. And I won't.
Northern European deli combines a warm cafe vibe with a bit of market bustle..
In Short
Occupying a cozy corner in a low-key mini-mall, this deli draws a bustling crowd of transplanted Europeans and Americans with gourmet tastes. One side is comfy cafe and the other a cornucopia of Continental delicacies--Belgian chocolates, Dutch onions, Swiss spaetzle and jars of Swedish lingonberries. But the main focus is German, offering baked goods, candies and spice mixes for soups. The deli case displays wursts and cheeses, and a small newsstand with German papers also pawns greeting cards.
Not bad, but theres much better sandwiches elsewhere nearby. The sandwiches here aren't bad at all. Their meats were decent and their bread was soft and flavorful. It gets extremely packed for lunch so arrive early. If you want a really good sandwich, there are other better places very close to here. But if you must get a sandwich here, they're perfectly acceptable.
