What Our Expert Scouts Say

February 13, 2013

What looks like a hole in the wall from the street is actually a treasure trove of brown spirits, specifically single malt Scotch. For Macallan alone, they carry all the basics, plus the 1980 18 year, the 1946, and the Speymalt 1972 35 year. Shuffleboard and pool tables.

Great Beer Selection. Just a fantastic place to have a drink after work.

Abusive Owner, Overcharged Me. Did not provide Itemized receipt. I have been a patron of this bar for over two years. This evening, the supposed owner overcharged me on a tab and refused to provide me an itemized receipt saying "we do not do that here". I was respectful and was met only with anger and escalation of the situation. All I asked is that he itemized what I payed for. I left under duress, he said I should never come back again. I am issuing a warning to all of those who are considering patronizing this bar. Make sure you carefully check exactly what you order and keep a tab in your head. Depending on the holiday or how busy the bar is, your bill may fluctuate.

Best Bar for Whiskey (or Whisky) in LA - Arguably. This place gets five stars on the whiskey selection alone. 'Cause that's what I drive all the way to The Pint for.

It's probably the best place for single malt scotch in Los Angeles. Seven Grand is a close competitor, except most of their whiskies are official distillery bottlings -- at the Pint, there is a massive selection of independent and single-cask bottlings (the more you get into single malts, the more malts you'll want to sample, and you'll understand why this gets important). Prices are generally fair, but you might want to have a good idea of what's a deal and what's excessive before ordering the pricey stuff. Currently they've got over 200 whiskies and counting.

And there's a heck of a lot of beer, like 30 on tap alone. A handful are cask-conditioned, hand-pumped ales! Yum!!

Eat before going, there's no food here or near.

As others comment, this place is as laid-back and unpretentious as you can get. If you're looking for luxury, go to Seven Grand. Looking for a dive bar (with non-dive-bar-selection), go here. Plenty of activities to keep you busy, including the aforementioned shuffleboard table. The staff is always happy to chat and give recommendations. I've never encountered any rudeness from staff or patrons, and I'm a high-maintenance guy.

Cheap drinks--great happy hour. When I first walked in I felt like everyone was staring at me b/c it's a true SM local place. I have lived in SM for about 2 yrs and it was my first time there. Older crowd, great happy hour, super slow bartenders!

Ask to see there drink list for Whisky's and beer's. Great! I went for HH and had a good time...going back this weekend w/friends.

Pros: casual, local hang-out, cheap drinks and pool tables.

Cons: parking, no apps/food, takes awhile to get a drink

My Favorite Bar in LA. I love this place. Relaxed with no pretensions. Lots of amazing beers (you may think you are in Brussels) and scotches (you may think you are in the Highlands). The owner treats you like family even if it is your first time there and the crowd is usually pretty low key. It's the perfect combo of high quality drinks and laid-back atmosphere.

World's Rudest Barender. Now, I love dive bars, and I've been to my fair share of cool places throughout Los Angeles where cheap drinks and basic wall coverings have no bearing on the quality of an experience, but this place just didn't do it for me. Not only is it way too bright for its own good, lighting-wise, but the girl working the bar was one of the rudest people I've met in LA. I asked her if they had any worthwhile beers on tap (being a beer bar, they clearly do), and she goes, " can't you read the list?" as if I was completely wasting her time. It sounds trite in writing, but I've never been so poorly treated at a bar in my life. I understand they're not the Ritz, but that's no excuse for being downright mean to a customer. Being condescended upon at a bar that has little going for it certainly does not make me want to return. To make matters worse, she overcharged my credit card by $7 and didn't even make the slightest attempt to apoogize. She simply threw the bill at me, which was even more dumbfounding since it was a Wednesday night and my friends and I were among the only people at the bar. The restrooms are also small and extremely dirty.

Over 100 bottles of Scotch!. Terrific bartenders at this Santa Monica dive bar. Shufflepuck, and huge beer and scotch selections is what the draw is. Decent for catching a game if not a Fri or Sat night too.

Great local spot. This isn't a trendy bar but i don't want to describe it as a dive even though it has some divey elements. Never too crowded, Reasonably priced drinks, darts, pool and shuffle board(Sweet!!)

Santa Monica's favorite pub is a playground for adults--without the attitude.. In Short
There's nothing Hollywood about this Santa Monica dive, and the locals want to keep it that way. This hidden gem is a haven for anyone who just wants to kick back, enjoy a drink and hang out with friends. If you're looking for something with a tad more energy, the Pint can also be your playground. Darts, foosball, shuffleboard and pool will keep the sports fans cheering all night long. While playing, a jukebox pumps out classic rock and Top 40 hits.

Great hang out. Pool tables, shuffle board, darts, and drinking. Great wide range of beers in bottles and on tap. Not overly expensive for Santa Monica. No bar food, but a cool crowd. Has a cool atmosphere of hanging out, drinking, kicking back. Great after work bar.
