Fun for Dim Sum. Typically, restaurants aren't intimidating. But when I walked into CBS Seafood on a recent Saturday morning, I clammed up like a third-grader making his talent-show debut.

People were speaking Chinese in frenzied voices, carts took up most of the floor's negative space, and the walls were moving (no, really -- there were seafood tanks on the east wall).

Once seated, it was all about surveying the fleet of carts passing by and picking out something that looked good. There were no signs, and the waiters only gave a brief description of what was on the plate or in the mysterious-looking canister. If you want to try dim sum and don't have a seasoned veteran with you, it's going to be a guessing game. Try to have fun with it.

There will be some hits (like steamed BBQ pork buns) and misses (like the shrimp wrapped in large, heavy white noodles). If the misses start to add up, wait until the dessert cart rolls around and load up on egg cream buns.

By all accounts, the small downtown LA Chinatown isn't a shining example of the city's best Chinese food. The San Gabriel Valley is where it's at.

If you've never tried a dim sum meal, give it a shot. At the very least, it'll be an interesting experience, which is a lot more than you can say about picking up Panda Express. -Phil

Would never eat here!. The dim sum was horrible. If you must have good dim sum try: New Capital Seafood 140 W Valley Blvd Fl/4 #D San Gabriel, CA 91776

or try Ocean or Dragon in China Town.

Much better.

Best Dim Sum is New Capital in SGV, Valley Blvd. CBS Dim Sum is not that great after all.

I love dim sum and have been cruising almost all the dim sum restaurants. I have been to Ocean Star, Harbor City, NBC, Thrimphal which are the more popular ones in the city. Then this weekend, I went to CBS, read all the rave reviews to see what it was all about. I was disappointed!! The carpet is sooooo old and dirty. The place too small for the carts to move smoothly. If you want clean, smooth, great feng shui and fantastic dim sum in the city......Go to...

New Capital Seafood 140 W Valley Blvd Fl/4 #D San Gabriel, CA 91776 (626) 288-1899

It is located on the 4th floor and the place is huge, clean, spacious and bustling with customers. The variety of foods are incredible. Service is good and fast. Ask the waiter for this dessert, Seong Pay Lai! It is a custard which is not too sweet. It comes out around 11.30am and is popular. Go soon and I will see you there!!

You will agree that this is the best place!! After dim sum, you can go shopping at 99 Ranch Market and Hawaii Market. Enjoy!

Great food. Best tasting food in Los Angeles. CBC restaurant is a great place to take your family and friends for breakfast , lunch or dinner. The food is tasty, fresh and filling.

If you love seafood then I suggest you order the lobster. It was filling and delightful

Best Fresh Seafood in Town...... Forget the butter and lobster/seafood traditional style....CBS has the best Lobster with Ginger , Garlic and Green Onion...best taste nothing can compare to this. There peeking duck., deep fried prawns, and mixed seafood soup is the best too! Very good and indulging. Very prompt in seating and serving. Good customer service.

YES!. Friends,

CBS is no typical Chinese restaurant. My wife and I began going here in 1997. Since, my children have had many first here. First Dim Sum, first look at ducks hanging and there first interaction with the Chinese culture (New Year's parade)... The food is great (morning to late night) and the service is exactly what one should expect from a Chinese eatery (straight forward)! The food is fresh and made to order. Anyone who knows LA's Chinatown, knows CBS. From the Parking Attendant to the staff, we are still recognized though we only get there 4-5 times a year now...

Try it! It is well worth it! $-$$

Good dim sum. With all the places outside of Chinatown to get great dim sum, it's nice to see there are still good dim sum restaurants in Chinatown. CBS Seafood is always packed, especially on the weekends. If you get their early and take your time eating you'll be able to enjoy some of the lunch items that come out closer to lunch. But the attraction here is definitely the seafood. Shrimp is everywhere on almost every dim sum item. Give it a try if you're in the downtown area on a Sunday.
