In Short – Originally opened in Little Tokyo in 1983, this mini-chain brings Japanese curry to the masses. Enthusiastic crowds of 20-somethings, couples and families fill the dining room. Most curry dishes consist of battered and fried meat, poultry and seafood served over rice and covered with sweet-spicy Japanese brown curry gravy. Like its Japan-based counterparts, the kitchen also cooks up spaghetti and other noodle dishes. Servers prepare stone-grilled, seafood curry rice with calamari and scallops tableside in a cast-iron pot.
Throwback to college days

I ate quite often at Curry House in college and was always impressed by the service, the portions, and the helpful friendly atmospher. This was the one on Sawtelle. I've been to the one in South Bay and remembered they were very good at accomodating our group of 12. This one in Downtown doesn't seem like its service is up to par with the other two.
The food is still good. You won't leave hungry. The prices have gone up, but thats to be expected in LA. I am disappointed that the 3 jars of pickles aren't out on the table anymore, but i'm pacified by the 1 jar of red pickles that they give when requested.
The service was really so-so...they are always packed and sometimes I feel like they're trying to turn you out as soon as possible but then when you need a refill on water or something the servers are no where to be found.
- Pros: Good Portions, Kid Friendly
- Cons: Always Crowded, Service is so-so
Terrific Curry!

I was first introduced to Japanese curry at this location back in 1998. I was floored. There's a cool bookstore across the way and a little market downstairs to explore. I've been to just about every Curry House in California and I will always have a special place in my heart for this one in Japantown. Keep in mind that their tables are tiny, the service is spotty, and it gets CROWDED during peak times. But you're not here for the atmosphere or the service; you're here for the curry. And they have it. A LOT of it. And it's awesome.
- Pros: curry
- Cons: crowds, noise, service
What happen to this place?

What is wrong with Curry House these days? The food used to be so on par with the value and service. Ate there recently and it was a whole different experience, the food was not as good as compared to the days of their glory (80s-90s), it's less and more expensive. The service was very unprofessional and very, very slow. They need some serious reorganizing or else they will close their doors one by one like how they did on the Beverly Hills location. I wish I can say it was a "new" experience, but new would be too good to classify poor service and value.
- Pros: n/a
- Cons: service, value, etc...
