Editorial Review for Philippe the Original – by Sandy Masuo
The Scene
For nearly a century, this landmark eatery has been serving up an original French dip sandwich. Situated between Dodger Stadium and Union Station, this old-time spot is decorated with baseball and train motifs. It's cavernous, with sawdust on the floor and long tables for communal dining. Enclosed booths are perfect for power lunches.
The Food
There's standard deli fare--soups, sandwiches, salads, plus a slew of pies. The signature sandwich is a masterpiece. Meat (beef, pork, lamb, ham or turkey) is dunked in au jus and layered in a perfect French roll--soft inside, with a light, crispy crust. Sides are classics as well: crispy slaw, potato and macaroni salad. There's also a wide choice of pickled things--tangy beets, purple eggs, pigs' feet and, of course, a full complement of pickles. Wash your big dipper down with a cold brew or a glass of cabernet from the extensive wine list.

I've been there many times in the last 5 years and this place's food is so great comparing to the price I've spent. The sandwiches always come with big sizes and the dessert is super generous. The only cons is the service but I don't make it bother me because all I need is good food and good dessert!!.
Pros: good food at reasonable price
Cons: a bit bad service

Unless you have to go, just to say "I've been there" steer clear of this tourist trap. Poor quantity (sandwiches are very small) Poor quality ( I tasted the bread, remeber the old "where's the beef?!?!") (pickled eggs arent really pickled, they are merely colored and slightly flavored) Poor value (Too expensive for a sandwich)
Pros: Coffee.
Cons: Everything except the coffee.
