The Scene
On the 4th Floor of the New Otani Hotel, one must navigate past guest rooms and traipse over a roof housing water-heaters to enter the dank and unglamorous Sanwa 'Spa.' Facilities include metal schoolyard lockers, a dormitory-like shower, and a simple redwood-paneled sauna. After dressing in a hospital robe (yes, the ones that open in the back - and yes, the spa is coed) clients are led to a large conference room with massage tables that are separated with curtains, following the 'hospital' theme.
The Services
Although facials and Swedish massage are offered, the spa specializes in Shiatsu, a traditional Japanese finger pressure technique. The masseuses are skilled; deft and powerful fingers trigger pressure points, crackle through tense muscle tissue, and relieve physical tension. Although shiatsu is performed through a terrycloth towel, modest clients may find relaxation difficult in an atmosphere with open-back robes and mere curtains separating the women and the men.
