The Scene – Built in 1926 by the famed novelist Zane Grey, this peaceful hillside hotel boasts unfettered views of the Casino, the mountains and the gleaming Pacific Ocean. Each of the 16 Southwestern-style rooms is named after one of Grey's novels (he originally built the adobe house as a restful place for writing and fishing). The main house still bears the original living room, grand piano and log-mantled fireplace. Just a short walk from the main living quarters is an open-air pool surrounded by gardens and sun decks. Owner lied to me over the phone and no deadbolt on door & no lock on bathroom window.

I read about this place online and it sounded like a charming place to stay, with a great view. It was cute and did have a great view, but I would NOT stay there again. I called to inquire about rates. The owner answered and told me that if I booked now over the phone, he would give me 10% off the regular rate. I said ok and went ahead and booked it over the phone.
We got there and checked in but when we went to pay, they said they did not know anything about the 10% discount. They said the owner was out and made us pay full price. The owner was nowhere to be found all 3 days we were there. Plus, our room's door did not have a deadbolt, just a regular lock! Also, the bathroom window didn't have a lock on it at all. It was a small window and high up, but it should have had a lock on it.
This was the first time I had stayed overnight in Avalon and was not pleased. I hope next time we go we will have a better experience staying somewhere else. The taxi was nice to have, as it was quite a walk into town. We walked it once because the taxi was not running very late at night. The shower and changing area that's available after check out were teeny tiny, but nice to be able to use.
- Pros: Lovely view, unique room decor, taxi service, shower/changing area
- Cons: did not hold up their end of the bargain, lock problems, long uphill walk after taxi hours
