Using $1,200 in savings, Charles Von der Ahe opened a small grocery in downtown Los Angeles in 1906. Now part of the Safeway retail company, Vons can be found throughout California and in parts of Nevada. The full-service deli and bakery is handy for home or office parties, or for those who want a gourmet meal or treat at home. Some locations have added perks including in-store coffee shops, restaurants or ATMs.

The bakery department is tops!. I was so surprised at how good a supermarket cake could be. It was a chocolate cake with raspberry mousse that I brought to a party. Everyone was exclaiming how delicious it was, and when someone asked where I got it, the crowd was shocked to hear it was from Vons. I have bought sheet cakes from this particular location as well. I don't trust just any Vons, and if you've had a nasty supermarket cake, then you'll know what I mean. What's the best part, is that when I pay for my desserts I don't feel as if I've been held up and pistol whipped as I exit the store - they're a great value!
