Serious issues with food quality, integrity, and service – I took my family to this establishment as I wanted to find restaurants we don't normally frequent as I was tired of the places we normally go to. Bad mistake. I take my family there tonight, and I ask the waitress for a soup noodle dish for the kids. The Silver Noodle soup has very few noodles and two shrimps. Whoopee. Unless your idea of a meal is to stare at a flame all night from the dish, you're outta luck. I ordered the pork chop dish . Then I was told there was no pork chop, so we ordered the tamarind chickent instead, which was a dollar more. Whataever. Then I was told the we suddenly had pork chops, and that it was the last dish and that I should get it. Hmmm...suspicious, but okay. So I order the pork chop, the bbq chicken, combination chow mein, rice. Ten minutes later, the waitress shows up saying that using our restaurant coupon, we needed to buy something else because I had only tallied up $34 and the coupon said we needed to buy $35. We've gone to other establishements where tax might take you over the total, or some flexibility was shown. No, you can't order a soda, you can't just give them a dollar. I told them, just give me the tamarind chicken thing then,it was a dollar more. Ican't believe I'm having a conversation about a dollar. She said no, the chops I already ordered. I already have too much food. She recommends the avocado roll, and I am going to say yes just to get her out of my face. Besides, nothing with avocado on it can be bad, right?Wrong, the rolls had a funny taste to it, too tangy, and the filling was a mush that didn't taste fresh at all. $7.50 for that? The bbq chicken, how can you ruin, but it was bland. The chow mein was horrendous, soggy and the chicken used was chicken end parts, not prime chicken parts. I own a restaurant, so i know. Honestly, the service was horrendous, parking you need to find around the corner somewhere, the food was horrific, and worse of all, some girl came and argued with me about a dollar. They have no business acumen, because an unhappy customer will never come back ( I won't) and I'll make sure nobody I know wastes their money there. I read a review where someone complained about portion size. How could you want more of that? Don't even get me started on the six legged insect I saw.
Horrible Food & Shady Business Practices! – We would give them ZERO stars, but the least you could give is 1 star...
We recently had dinner at Chandra and the experience was beyond disappointing! The fish wasn't fresh and was overly done, the tom yum soup was bland and fishy.. the worse thai food I have ever eaten. The place wasn't even busy when we were there, but the food took a long time to come out. The only thing that was semi-edible was the pad thai, and it took ages for them to box it up.
But the WORST thing that happened was the charge that appeared on our credit card statement. I hope for their sake that they accidentally charged the wrong amount to our credit card, because our receipt said one amount and the charge that appeared on our credit card was $8+ more... it appeared someone decided to give themselves an extra tip. We are having our credit card company reconcile the "OVERCHARGE".
If you still decide to eat at Chandra after reading our review, BEWARE and keep your credit card receipt.
Try: Vegetable Soup – Normally when going to a Thai restaurant, they don't have Veggie Soup. Thai soups mostly have either coconut milk or that sour lemongrass flavor. For those who want a more "mild" version, but still want Thai, I say go for the Veggie Soup! Totally delish & you can have room for appetizers & desserts! ^_^ The service was totally warm & friendly. Nice decor & everything, but the menu with its poorly shot pictures throws off its elegance.
Great authentic thai food, Excellent Service – This is definitely one of the best thai restaurants in los angeles, let alone pasadena. The food was excellent, the pad thai superb, eggplant with pork, and the crispy shrimp had all unique flavors. I am definitely going back to this place at least once a week from now on. Easy parking below the restaurant , and very friendly hostesses.
Upscale Thai food – Slightly "finer dining" that your average strip mall Thai joint, this chic spot can be crowded and slow, but mostly delivers. The pad thai is unremarkable, but the appetizer plate was one delicacy after another. Prices are high, but the atmosphere is eccelctic and hip.
great padthai – I don't care about the 'motif' or the 'atmosphere', just the food and if a thai restaurant can't make pad-thai right I can't eat there. chan dra gets it; the noodles are orange from the sauce, not grey from the lack there of. Average prices and portions were not that large though. oh, and if you like pretty waitresses, they got some dimes (I'm sure they were hired for that purpose). oh, and can't go wrong with "phuket beer" (pronounced: pu-ket?) we have a joke running.
Food was below average. – Its got a nice theme and the service was excellent. But the food wasn't all that exciting for a Thai restaurant. The spices weren't what you would expect, either too spicey or not flavored enough. The seafood dish was not the fragrance that I would expect.
Extremely Underwhelmed – I heard so much about Chandra from others and thought I'd try it out myself. I don't know why people like this place. The decor is depressing and dark, the service is horribly slow and the food was very so-so. Try "Thai in L.A" in Glendale. It's a little whole in the wall that have fantastic food!
Best Thai Around – I'm away at school now and one of the things I alway make sure to do when I am back in Pasadena is eat at Chand Dra. The food is excellent, the staff is wonderful, and you can get a three-course lunch for under eight bucks.
It's fairly small, so it can get crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings. You either have to park in the garage they share with the hotel next door or find street parking. (read the signs, you can't always park on Arroyo!)
I'd reccomend going in the early afternoon and getting the yellow curry lunch, that's what I always do.
Consistently Good – I have been eating at (and ordering for delivery and take-out) Chandra for the past few years. The food and service has been consistently GREAT! There is nothing that I would not order again. The Larb is the best I have ever had. The employees are always sweet and accommodating. Definitely recommend to everyone who wants great Thai food at a great value!
