A diamond in the rough. Not what you would expect from a walk up eatery attached to a liquor store, Gerlach's Grill is a true treasure of Pasadena. The food is fresh, well portioned, and expertly prepared. It is obvious that the cook takes pride in his work, I have never had anything short of exceptional from Gerlach's. I do suggest calling ahead as each dish is prepared to order, so a 15-20 min wait is to be expected.

Fresh Fish Find. I ordered a tuna salad at Gerlach's, expecting a few slices of ahi served with greens. What I got was a half-pound of perfectly grilled tuna steak plopped on a fresh salad. Gerlach's offers wide variety of fresh grilled fish (tuna, salmon, sea bass, swordfish, sometimes shark). The fish steaks come with salad or grilled vegetables. They also make good fish tacos, sandwiches and burritos, as well as kabobs, hummus, stuffed grape leaves, falafel and lamb. There are grilled eggplant, peppers and other vegetables, brochettes, and rice for vegetarians. (Suggestion: Ask them to go easy on the salt.) Call ahead for pick up. Near the entrance to the 110, it makes for a quick stop on your way back into Pasadena after a long day.
