The Scene
Line up alongside the near-fanatical followers who swear by this hole-in-the-wall bakery. With sunny decor, as well as a few tables and chairs strewn about, it's the perfect place for Cal Tech students and faculty and nearby neighbors. Service is always friendly and helpful.

The Food
Sumi Chang cut her chops at La Brea Bakery's cafe, helping to perfect the croissant and, indeed, Euro Pane's croissants melt in the mouth. One taste of the chocolate croissant will release your French inner child: flaky, buttery, light layers of pastry surround an intense, bittersweet chocolate filling. The lemon bars are super citrusy, and the ginger scones zip up any boring English tea. Sandwiches like the dill-laced yogurt-chicken salad or the unsurpassed egg salad--velvety soft eggs, not quite hard-boiled, mixed with homemade mayo and mounded on sourdough toast--are always winners. It's worth showing up early for the flaky quiche filled with caramelized onions and kabocha squash.

I was looking for some good pastries, and figured I'll go here since there were so many wonderful things being said...but I didn't read all the reviews and now that I have been there, came back, and read the reviews (too late!), this is what I have to say. The first thing that I usually do when I go to a new bakery/pastry shop is to try their croissants (and chocolate croissants), as I have had the real stuff in France, and other places that claim to be pretty authentic french bakery...So that's what I got: a croissant, a chocolate croissant and an apple tarte (apple slice is what they called it...). Anyway, three little items, and I expected to pay, but not that much!! And I wouldn't mind paying for them again. Unfortunately, they weren't what I expected from a pricey bakery. I had the croissant first, and it was not warm (it was only 7:30 am), crispy, or flaky as it should be. It was not buttery or sweet (not even the slightest), and for sure didn't melt in my mouth, and I'm no food critic. I just know when it's good. Or not, in this case. I was so disappointed... Then a few hours later, my carb cravings returned, and I figured, I might as well try the chocolate croissant. Maybe it would be better than the plain one (and by the way, Costco croissants are better). This one was no winner either. The chocolate was hard and the croissant was thick, not light, fluffy and flaky... Then I tried the apple tarte and that was a little better...but for what I paid and the simplest thing couldn't even win me over, I wouldn't return.

Did I mention their lemon bars? I don't normally eat a lot of sweet treats...and wasn't really impressed with their sandwiches or croissants...but I will go for their lemon bars ANY TIME. I have to say some of their freshly baked breads are nice...chewy textures with crisp or crunchy crusts. I particularly like their oat breads when they sprinkle the tops with fresh oats. Again...I have to say... LEMON BARS. :-)

Everything at Euro Pane is top quality. Some of the best restaurants in the area get all of their bread from Euro Pane. The owner takes very careful efforts to make sure everything they serve there is good. As an example, when they put "lettuce" on their sandwiches, it isn't a big leaf of iceberg, it's mixed greens. Their coffee is excellent. I drink straight espresso, no sugar, so I notice bad coffee immediately. I find it highly amusing that someone criticized the croissants. They are perfect - crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Croissants anywhere else are very disappointing to me after eating them here. You might not think that a tuna salad sandwich is special, but they happen to make their tuna how I like it. I highly recommend the meatloaf sandwich, moist and tasty. If you like "slow" food come here.
