I love the YMCA because I worked there in the past and have great memories. I also love it because I have met many great women there who always have great stories. Anyway, the reason I'm giving the Glendale facility a thumbs down is because the new director Jeanette, isn't very fair. Also, the lady Seta that works in the front is very rude. I volunteered in the youth department a few times, (including once for halloween with Jeanette) and due to being unemployed and suffering from depression I was allowed in the facility to work out. I was in the system as a volunteer.I know nothing in life is free, but the YMCA takes donations to help people that need financial assistance. I definitely need the assistance and this director recently approached me without knowing the facts and pretty much accused me of not paying since 2004. How unprofessional and rude can you be? She did this with the info that "Seta" gave her, because my friend works at the Y and I really think that "Seta" was trying to cause problems for her. They both assumed I was getting hooked up, which definitely wasn't the case. I worked there in 2004, therefore I am in the system, but Jeanette assumed I was not paying since 2004. If you work there, you get free membership, so I never had any payments. I hadn't been around for 8 years. I only came back to work out in October 2012 and had volunteered. I think some of their policies have recently changed about allowing volunteers to work out, but that doesn't mean that I knew about these changes and that she had to be so insensitive. The Glendale YMCA has had many renovations recently, like new paint and the toddler room being renovated, but all these good things are only on the surface. What about customer service and treating people fairly(not assuming)? I really think this place needs to focus on these things, because that is truly what matters. I've heard great things about the Burbank Y, maybe that's the place to join once I do get a job.
A nationally recognized recreation and athletic center geared toward community improvement. – In Short
The first U.S. branch of the YMCA started in Boston in 1851; there are now more than 2,500 locations nationwide, making it the country's largest nonprofit community service program. Each YMCA reflects the community it's in, offering differing services based on the area. Most include fitness areas with aerobic equipment, classes and racquetball and tennis courts. Many also have day care and after-school programs, as well as summer day camps.
Same Experience! – Unfortunately, I had a very similar experience. Getting information from them is like pulling tooth. It's as if they don't want to get people involved. I wish I knew who to complain to. It's just ridiculous.
Rude! – I was interested in joining this YMCA, but now I am completely turned off. I called to ask about membership, and the lady in Member Services who answered the phone sounded annoyed and impatient and eventually hung up on me! She was patronizing and very rude the whole time. She was also carrying on a parallel conversation in the background, giggling with the person, and made me repeat all my questions because she was not listening. She did not apologize for any of her behavior. When I asked her about the facilities offered at the location, she pressumably got another call and hung up on me!! I hope her manager finds out about her poor behavior. I realize this may be an isolated incident or she maybe just one bad apple in the barrel, but the Glendale YMCA has just lost a valuable potential customer.
