This restaurant's first roadside chicken stand opened up in Guasave, Mexico in 1975. A family-inspired recipe of chicken marinated in herbs, spices and citrus juices was an overnight success and the Mexican chain opened its first American location in Los Angeles in 1980. Ever since, customers have been devouring the house specialty--zesty flame-grilled chicken served with tortillas and fresh salsa. Other menu options include pollo bowls (rice and chicken), salads and quesadillas.

Be Flexible. I've been an El Pollo Loco fan for years. This locations tries my patience and it's only because it's (fairly) convenient that I keep coming here. The drive-thru area is next to a busy and noisy street so ordering takes a while for the employee to get your order right. Once you think it's finalized you drive up to the window for your food. You'd better check your order because more often than not something isn't right.

I also think El Pollo Loco has done some strane things with their menu. I like the value menu but miss some of my favorites from the past. I guess they're just trying to keep up with their competition.

11/6/07: My favorite meal? A BRC burrito ($1.09), spicy cheese quesadilla ($1) and avocado salsa (free). That's comfort food for me!
