Since opening its first diner in the 1940s, this restaurant has developed into one of the most popular West Coast franchises, claiming industry innovations such as the drive-through window, partial-service dining rooms and their iconic Six Dollar Burgers--a line of oversized, sit-down restaurant-style hamburgers with Angus patties. Other hearty options abound, including steak-and-egg breakfast burritos, crispy chicken sandwiches and chili cheese fries to supplement standbys like onion rings and shoestring potatoes.

Downhill food quality. I've been a long time frequent customer of this particular Carl's. Unfortunately, the food quality has dropped below "inedible" over the last few years. Excessive grisle in the meat, dried-out chicken in the nachos (they serve "Green Burrito" items), grease-soaked zucchini, etc. What makes it nearly comical is that their shake machine has been "out of order" for over a year. I called Carl's toll-free line to complain. Shortly after that, the "Tell us how we did" sign mysteriously disappeared.
