I have eaten here a few times with my wife and some friends in the past. The food has gone downhill since then, the service is rude, slow, and terrible. The prices have become ridiculous, and when you receive the check there are ridiculous charges on it. For some reason every time I receive the bill not it never adds up. I asked to speak to the manager to have him explain the reason for this and he straight laughed in our face. He was rude, had a terrible demeanor and I would not recommend this place to anyone. I will never eat here again. Always make sure to check your bill and make sure that you are not being over charged the way that we have. This place likes to add charges thinking that no one will notice or pay attention, and when you inquire about them, you get laughed at in your face by this rude new manager (Shawn?) This place has become a madhouse for money and service has gone to hell. I know of several other establishments in the san fernando valley with better sushi nowadays. Needless to say, I will NEVER return to kushiyu again. Hopefully this saves someone money and a lot of anger by avoiding Kushiyu altogether. WORST SERVICE EVER!!!!!!!
yummy fresh fish, always packed. – This place is the gold standard when it comes to fresh fish. I have never had a bad experience here! The food is great, the service is great! Make sure you call ahead since some nights there are very busy and may not be able to seat you for a while.
best SUSHI/japanese resturant! – One of my favorite sushi places in the San Fernando Valley by far!
They have really unique dishes, and always so fresh. The cost of the sushi/dishes are pretty good.
What I like is that its like a bar type of thing and they prepare the food right infront of you. The staff are super friendly and always upbeat. They're always very knowledgeable and skilled cooks!
The parking can be a pain, but I dont live that far off from this place, so walking isnt out of the question.
Good food but a bit pricey. – Worth the money for the quality of food your getting here.
A new contender... – Eversince my favorite sushi monger has left the U.S., I've been in search of a new place to call my "regular" Valley sushi spot... Kushiyu is a now a contender.
Great selections and daily specials on the menu. My party was seated promptly. Friendly faces and a great following even on a Thursday night... they were quite busy.
Menu standouts for me - Tai Cilantro, uni (*sushi* - fresh, delicious), hirame (halibut sashimi), and a few of the Kushiyaki items - chicken skin, squid, sesame albacore.
My only complaint is the service... no doubt, they were friendly and prompt... however, I feel that the server we were assigned had a touch of ADD/ADHD... she couldn't focus and at one point, in the middle of taking my order, she left to another table to pick up their discarded Kushiyaki sticks while I briefly paused in thought... strange... she didn't say anything or excuse herself... I know, minor details... but it does leave an impression. I'll definitely be back and sit at the large sushi bar. I think that's where all the action is!
Yak It To Me! – Not only does Kushiyu’s Japanese chefs serve fresh sushi from the morning’s market, they also offer grilled fish and meats, known as yakitori. If you are a fish lover like me, try the seabass kushiyaki--it is jam-packed with flavor and melts in your mouth. However, my personal favorite is the kawa (chicken skin). It’s just as delicious as bacon.
BBQ and Sushi under one roof – They have a BBQ menu for fresh pepper, vegetables and meats like liver, thong Giselle and seafood which they will grill on an old fashioned japanese styled BBQ. It is fantastic.
Outstanding Sushi – Listen up..

Kushiyu- Not what it once was!! – We have been enjoying Kushiyu for over 15 years. Tonight the service and food was far below mediocre. We are so disappointed that our favorite restaurant is no longer the place it once was. The owner was slightly apologetic at our disappointment, but handed us our bill without hesitation. We will not be going back anytime soon. If you do decide to go, please let them know if you are not happy...maybe they will go back to how they used to be.
