They store food improperly!
by Fritters at Citysearch
We used to go to this place all the time, get all our cat food there. And over the course of several years (5-7) occasionally between 1-3 of our cats (we had about 2-4 at the time) would all suddenly get "fatty liver disease" and then about half of the sick cats would die. This happened OVER AND OVER. In the course of using them as our sole pet food store we lost about 3 cats to this, not to mention the thousands of dollars in vet bills. One day we smelled the dry food we were feeding them and it smelled WRONG.
It turns out you have to store pet food at the right temperatures and not for too long or certain molds can multiply and turn the food toxic. Our cats weren't all suddenly ,oddly, getting "fatty liver disease", we were feeding them poizin food. Red Barn stores their food in an uncooled barn in the summertime and doesn't have a lot of turnover on the products. This is perfect conditions for the toxic molds.
While I love the people there and the free popcorn, that's not enough to make up for improperly storing the food until it turns into toxic, liver-destroying poizin. The food gets too warm in the barn, especially in the summertime. Don't buy pet food here unless you want your pets to die.
I hate being so harsh on the place, but since we stopped buying food there, our pets haven't gotten "fatty liver disease" once, and it used to happen every year or two. The people are great. If you want to support this lovely old business, buy collars and leashes and cat scratchers and pet condos there. But don't, for the love of your pet, buy anything edible here.
Sorry, guys...
- Pros: Free popcorn, firiendly helpful staff
- Cons: pet food bought here may kil your pet
