favorite sushi place, great low prices, great fresh fish, wonderful sumo sushi, very attentive owner, fantastic bob special, favorite sushi joint
Nice neighborhood-y place with great fish.
I've been driving past this place every day since I moved to the area a year ago, and finally decided to try it. Very glad we did -- always nice to discover you've got a great corner sushi spot in the neighborhood.
The prices are reasonable, and the fish is great -- much better than I ever expect to find this far inland. <g> The hostess suggested the fresh half-shell oysters and they were delicious.
The funky, black-light décor is bound to annoy the white-tablecloths-and-ferns snobs, but who cares about them -- the atmosphere is cozy and inviting.
Great local spot. Wonderful specials.. Great valley sushi, low prices, and great specials. They also have a full hot menu for those not interested in the raw stuff.
Good service - Terrible fish. Ok ok ok ... I admit it - we are total sushi snobs. Our favorite sushi joint in LA just changed owners and now, we are in a bit of a sushi crisis. Granted, we have been spoiled by some of the best quality fish in Los Angeles. So, we thought - let's wander around our new neighborhood (we just moved to Sherman Oaks) and start trying places. Bad idea. We should have run when we saw the black lights that make everything glow neon (including the rice). But we didn't. We perused the glowing menu and the first thing that struck us was that the 3 primary ingredients are shrimp, crab, and tuna (in a variety of conditions). We should have run at this point. But we didn't. The food arrived promptly and the owner was very attentive. However, the yellow tail was fishy, k-rab was abundant, makrel was either cooked or not cooked (to be determined), and the albacore... good lord... the albacore. We were confused by the presentation. It was like a cat food roll.. and then a cat threw up on top of it. And then it was sprinkled with green onions. I couldn't even swallow it. The texture was horrible. So, let me say this - if you are ok with the extent of your sushi meal consisting of shrimp rolls, shrimp tempura, shrimp salad, crab rolls, k-rab, fried crab, tuna, spicy tuna, seared tuna, tuna tartar... and that's it. You probably love this place. If you really love sushi... run away from the neon.
Best shushi for the best price!!!.
Just give it a try and you will fall in love forever :)
me and my hubby went there once and sumo has become our favorite place to eat sushi! Very nice owner, super fast service!
Pleasant Surprise. I went there with a friend of mine because our regular sushi place is closed on Mondays and, I think, I found me a new favorite spot! The atmosphere is very cute, it?s dark and they have neon lighting, so if you are wearing white ? you glow in the dark! Cooks and waiters are super friendly! And food is spectacular! We didn?t even look at the menu, we just told the owner ( he was walking around checking on everyone) what we like ? I like scallop and salmon sashimi, my friend likes fried rolls, and he ordered for us. Everything was fresh and delicious! 4 plates of rolls, 1 plate sashimi, 2 large beers = $58. Great value! I will come back with more friends and family.
Dont ignore that small sushi joint on the corner!. This place is excellent! Wish it was open longer but I gotta tell you amazing sushi, low prices, super friendly, huge portions! We ate and ate and ate and spent like 40 bucks! This place is fabulous! Dont underestimate the small sushi joint on the corner!
favorite sushi joint. i have to say i'm shocked by the negative comments listed so far for my favorite sushi place. when i first went here w/ my boyfriend 2yrs. ago, we've had a hard time trying any other sushi place, b/c we're in love w/ sumo! the people there are super friendly, and the cuts of fish are very generous for their low prices. the salmon is so amazing, that as it melts in your mouth, you don't even care about the odd variety of music that they can sometimes play here. i must have sumo at least once a week, or i go into withdraws. everytime our out-of-town guests come for a visit, we bring them here; and when we introduce our local friends to sumo they end up coming back for more! the residential street parking has never been an issue. we always get served immediately, and the chefs sometimes throw a couple free dishes our way b/c we've become regulars. love LOVE sumo sushi... you must go check it out for yourself!
Nothing Spectacular. Sumo sushi suffers from a number of key problems. While the sushi is ralatively cheap, it is not cheap enough to justify its poor quality. While its service is not horrible it is not quick and effecient. And while the dining experience there is not dissapoint it is not satisfying. The whole thing makes Sumo sushi such a forgattable place that the only reason i remembered to review it is that my younger brother (bless his naive little soul) really likes the place. You can do better
Great Value. Great value. The service was good, not great, but not as horrible as the other reviews suggest. A lot of sashimi in the sashimi plate!
A good value, but that's it. I seated myself, poured my own water, and had to ask several times for chop sticks. The owner was exteremly rude when I asked for chop sticks and told me, "Ask for everything at once" because my friend had asked for some teryaki sauce. I ordered spicy tuna to gauge the place, and it came out looking purple instead of the usual light orange color. I don't know what this place does right other than their low prices.
