Editorial Review for Casa Vega – by Katherine Turman
The Scene
The dim, festive interior is highlighted by framed bullfighting paintings, faux Tiffany lamps and red vinyl banquettes that host local families, rowdy young partiers and celebrities. Weekends find fans four-deep at the bar in the restaurant's jam-packed front dining room, quaffing potent margaritas, while the overflow are relegated to the eatery's driveway, sans drinks, until capacity permits entry to the bar.
The Food
Combo plates of crispy, tasty tacos and enchiladas with cheesy refried beans are reliable choices on the no-frills menu. Lighter fare includes specialties like the pollo en mole, with chicken simmered in chilies, chocolate and spices, garnished with sesame seeds. The vegetarian Mexican pizza appetizer with black beans, spicy veggie sausage and Parmesan also makes a good entree, especially when paired with chili con queso soup, a tangy and memorably rich broth with gooey cheese. Servers are harried, but speedy.

Insider Tips
When to GoIf you're hungry, skip prime weekend times from 7pm to 10pm. You're virtually guaranteed an hour or longer wait.
Where to SitUnless you enjoy crowds butting up against your table, avoid booths to either side of the front door in the main room. The space to the right of the bar, in the far left corner, is comparably quiet.

This place is a testament to the stupidity of diners or the triumph of a great location over quality. Good atmosphere, average food, and prices that are not outrageously high but you can go elsewhere and pay less. Does this really sound like the place YOU want to go to? Many do...and wait for a table! To me it's no fun to find just an average restaurant. I want to rave about a place. Nothing here is exceptional...it's packed and loud. I'll go if friends want me to join them but I'd never suggest this place.

I have been here many times. They always say the wait will be about 40 minutes (you'll see...) but I have never waited more than 10 minutes (you'll see...). The food is good, the ambiance is great, the margaritas are even BETTER! the only thing you have to watch out for is the bartenders - if you pay them in cash, they don't ring up your drink in the register - they will pocket the money. Or, if they do ring it up in the register, they will only ring up half the order and pocket the other half. So now I only pay with credit card. Other than that, it's a great spot. I live right around the corner and this place is much better than Senor Freds and Mexicali. If you want good food and good service, this is the place to be.
Pros: Great food, great ambiance, great service
Cons: The bartenders are shady!
