What People Are Saying About Chili John's

In Short – Opened in 1946, Burbank's oldest restaurant sports a painted white-brick exterior and a large red-lettered logo. Inside, gingham curtains, a mural of the Rockies and a welded horseshoe hat stand create the Midwestern vibe. The U-shaped counter surrounds a serving station where bowls of chili start off simple--just the meat or veggie base--and work up from there. Patrons specify mild, medium or hot, and can request beans, spaghetti, cheese, sour cream and onions.

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
It's closed from the last Saturday in June until Labor Day.
Look Good:
This chili packs a punch, so if you're not sure how hot you can handle, try the milder of the two. Order off the kids' menu for the mildest of all dishes.
The Extras:
Chili John's caters, and it will also pack and ship beef chili and beans all over the country.

Good eats / hot seats

by cory660 at Citysearch

went here w/ my work-lunch partner-in-crime a few weeks ago & thought it was awesome. The staff had a cheery attitude, even in the saunaesque conditions in there & they really do serve up a mean bowl of chili.

We wrote a giant review, complete w/ a bunch of pics, on our totally amateur lets-kill-some-time-at-work blog. Check it out here if you're so inclined: www./burbankbites.blogspot. com/

Spicy and Gooooood

by LaMaria at Citysearch

The oldest restaurant in Burbank, this U-shaped trove of chili pleasure is quite a find. When I worked in Burbank I was there every Tuesday. If you like chili and you haven't experienced it yet, go for it.

  • Pros: Chicken chili, over a handmade tamale
  • Cons: What do you expect from chili?

It is the best chili in L.A.!

by dgabbard2 at Citysearch

It is sensational! I have a friend from Idaho who always makes a visit to have their chili when he is in the area. He even orders chili makings via express mail so he can enjoy it between visits. It is true the price is a bit steep but it is so good that it is worth the price. Besides chili I always get one of their special hot dogs, with the seasoning added to the meat. Don't forget dessert--the pies are very tasty.

  • Pros: Great chili
  • Cons: seats at the horseshow are rather tight

Chili Johns Learning Experience

by reviewtoakill at Citysearch

DO......NOT............DO IT! There is a perfectly good reason for the name JOHN in the title.....because that is either where this concoction came out of or where you will be spending the remainder of your afternoon all while being so P.O.'d at yourself for the amount of money spent on this nonsense. We got lunch for 4 people.....that's 4 bowls of chili and an ungodly amount of oysters crackers and......IT WAS $48.00 BUCKS!!!!! FOURTY EIGHT!!!

Unbelievable......never.....ever. ever. ever .ever again.

  • Pros: THEY call it Chili
  • Cons: It's not

My favorite chili place

by BigChiliFan62 at Citysearch

Even though Chili John's is closed during the summer, I have been going here for almost 20 years. Gene is a hoot! Love the small diner atmosphere and the chili is by far the best I've ever had! That's why I keep coming back. And as far as this place staying in business, some lunchtimes I've seen 10 to 15 people waiting for a seat at the counter! And if you really want to taste their chile during the summer time, Gene will set you up just call ahead and he will have the fixings ready for you.

  • Pros: Cheap tasty chili
  • Cons: Not enough seats
