Great selection, fair customer service
by Mel Chini
With used bookstores falling off the map everyday, it's nice to see The Iliad still around and doing well. The shop has a great selection and is very conducive to an afternoon of walking around and browsing. However if you're just there for a quick pick up, the staff is very knowledgeable and can easily point you in the right direction and get you on your way.
I frequent the store out of convenience, as I haven't yet found another used bookstore with this expansive of a selection. My major complaint is that every time I have been in there I have felt the desk staff to be rude. If they were nicer it would be the perfect place, but beggers can't be choosers.
If you are looking to sell books or just in the area, please support The Iliad. Good used bookstores are so hard to find.
Best bookshop, used or otherwise, in LA

I stumbled across Iliad when I first moved to L.A. four years ago. I've moved from the valley and into Hollywood, but I still go there at least once a week to check out new books. I've yet to find a place that tops it. Aside from the great staff, the prices and selection are truly impressive. If I'm looking for something and they don't have it one week, chances are they will within the next month. Most used trade paperbacks range from $4-$8 in price, and the mass market ones in the back rooms are a couple of bucks. The atmosphere in Iliad is relaxing and inviting, with cats wandering around, endless shelves of books impeccably organized, and couches where you can sit and flip through a potential purchase. There's no better store in L.A.
- Pros: great selection, great prices, friendly staff
- Cons: none
Lotsa books, friendly staff

The draw of course is BOOKS - old, contempory, first editions and more. While youre there look out for the staffer with the live cat around his neck.
If you call ahead looking for a particular book, theyll hold it for you if its in stock.
- Pros: good parking, will hold books
