Editorial Review for Art's Delicatessen – by Mar Yvette
In Short
With a tagline that reads "Every Sandwich is a Work of Art," this airy cafeteria-style dining room is like a breath of fresh air ... straight from the '50s. Opened in 1957 by Art Ginsberg (who still makes the rounds every week), this Valley favorite is the kind of place where everybody knows your name. (Or where you at least know the waitstaff's names, considering most of them have been here for more than 20 years.) From the plethora of Naugahyde, Formica and linoleum to the larger-than-life photos of pastrami and corned beef sandwiches ("Jewish erotica" according to Art), this is deli done right. Portions are hefty (we repeat, portions are hefty), whether it be the house chicken and matzo ball soup or a classic Cobb salad, so be prepared to take home leftovers. The whole sandwiches can practically feed a family of four while a half-sandwich, which is really more like a 2/3 sandwich, is plenty for two.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkTry one of Art's old-school phosphates, an effervescent blend of soda water and dark-chocolate syrup.
Where to SitIn true deli style, every booth and table is just like the other. If you want to switch things up a bit, try a seat on the sidewalk patio.

I used to love going to Art's where the turkey and roast beef sandwiches were stacked to the ceiling. But even though the sandwiches are still thick, there is something unclean about the place. Maybe it's the fact I didn't feel well for a day after eating there? Guys, you make food, clean up your act or your customers like me will all end up at Jerry's
Pros: Big sandwiches
Cons: Nasty smell and it ain't cheap

When you come to a deli you expect a few things, cheap food, quickly made and of decent quality. Art's Deli On Ventura is none of these things. The fruit is frozen, coffee is stale and burnt ($3/cup) even at 9 am, and the prices are as nauseating as there potato knish's. The restaurant was empty at 9 am, I can't imagine why. I came here for a meeting for a film and alls I got was a disgusting plate of eggs and potatoes.
Pros: nice ventura view except for the middle eastern building across the street misplaced on the strip.
Cons: Prices, pictures of sandwhiches on wall, disgusting food.
