friendly service, great food, best southern bbq, great bbq place, huge ample portions, favorite meal, cold food
Too expensive.
Recently, my family and I went to Lucille's in Brea. We hadn't been there for some time so this was going to be a treat for us. We were shocked at how expensive this restaurant has become. Their prices use to be a little on the pricy side but manageable, but now they are outrageous.
In this bad economy, you'd think eating establishments would seriously consider cutting back on charging customers an 'arm and a leg' for their meals. But the opposite seems to be happening.
Lucille's is OK. Service is a cut above average and their food is also. But what they're charging for meals, we don't think we'll be going back. My advice to Lucille's, "Bring down the prices." Many families are in the same boat as we are and with the prices that Lucille's charges, makes it almost impossible to eat there unless you plan on taking on a second job.
Overwhelmed on mother's day.
My group of 5 waited, even with a reservation,a text-check in, for an hour after our time to get in. The place was packed, no safe place for people to stand and wait, the parking lot was so busy and people overflowed onto the pavement. My 5 yr old nearly got hit by a minivan whose driver was more concerned with swooping into a space.
Our party all got their meals one at a time, mine never came. The wait staff tried, my meal was comped by the manager finally. Wasn't worth the wait.
SO DISAPPOINTED. I was a guest with a party of 25 reserved by Anthony at 6:30pm on 3/19/11. I was very disappointed with the service by Alicia. My friend, my son and my self ordered separately from the party. Alicia ask me what I would like to order and I said the Smoked Salmon Salad, for my son was the kid ribs, and my friend ordered the Big Easy BBQ Shrimp with Half Lucille's App. plate. Everyone received their food and I continue waiting for nearly 15 minutes after. I asked a server named Phillip about my order and he said there was no order. He said Alicia didn’t write it down. I didn’t have anything to eat except the biscuits, snacking on my friends appetizers and drinking 2 refills of my strawberry lemonade. I had ordered my son strawberry lemonade as well and for some reason, I tried his and it was way too sweet, so I opened it up and saw that it was the base of the strawberry lemonade which seems to be the plain lemonade syrup. So that whole time, my son was drinking that thing and I asked Phillip about it. I said I ordered Strawberry Lemonade for my son and he said no, it was lemonade. So he brought me Strawberry Lemonade. I asked him if I can see the receipt and what was written down on the order, he said yes it was strawberry lemonade and he apologized. I am just so disappointed beyond belief and I would recommend this location in Long Beach, CA to anyone. My son loved his food, but I felt so stupid watching everyone else eat while I kept looking to see when my salad is coming.
YOU DISAPPOINT ME.... I actually completely disagree with the negative reviews. In fact, I find the negative reviews and comments to be extremely uncharacteristic of Lucille's. I have had BBQ from Kansas City. I have had BBQ from NY. I have had BBQ from Tenessee. I have had BBQ from Colorado. You name the BBQ, I've tried it. I thoroughly enjoy Lucille's and am a continuous customer. Of course you have your experiences with poor service, but that goes with EVERY restaurant. You go there for the BBQ, to enjoy good company, and to enjoy the southern-like ambiance. The BBQ suase is great, the apple butter and bthe iscuits aramazing! Simple, yet GREAT food.
yummmmm.
I LOVE this place...whenever I have family come to visit I always take them here...this place is seriously the best...The food is always good...I love the ribs and the mashed potatos...I don't like coleslaw but theirs is totally different...its not creamy...its more like chinese chicken salad...tangy delisiousness!!
I would eat here all the time if I had the choice...I always want to try their desserts, but never have any room left haha
Great BBQ. This place has great BBQ and sides - we went with a couple of friends and had such a great lunch there. NOTE: Costco sells Lucilles gift cards ($80 for $100 gift card). Worth buying if you go often enough.
LEARN ABOUT IT!. This was some of the best BBQ i've had in LA. This and NY BBQ are too good to pass up. Great everything
Met a rapper. I was here on a Saturday night and I met one of my favorite rappers, Chali 2na from Jurassic 5. He was really cool and I think that it made my dinner so much better. The bbq was kicking. I had the pulled pork bbq sandwich which I completely gobbled up. The waitresses were really nice and helpful. Good times here, good times.
Avoid at all costs, I am dumbfounded by the number of stars here, do people know what BBQ is?.
Since moving to southern California we have been looking for a decent BBQ place. This was not it. I am straight from the midwest, where we know what BBQ is. I have eaten BBQ in the Carolinas, Missouri, Texas, and everywhere in between. We tried as much as we could afford... the baby back ribs, BBQ beef ribs, and the brisket.
Both the baby back and the beef ribs were tough and dry, their sauce was at best mediocre. I found myself asking where the hickory smoked flavor was... is the smoker just for looks?! The brisket was by far the biggest disappointment. It was barely edible and we thought about returning it. It tasted like it was boiled in water, it was that bad! In my opinion you can judge a BBQ place by the brisket... Lucille's failed miserably.
The staff was classic California poor, our drinks sat empty for 10-15 minutes.
The sides were also terrible. The BBQ baked beans had some sort of funk to them (and not the good kind). The mac & cheese tasted like rubbery noodles in a yellow playdoh sauce. The baked potato and the sweet potatoes were fine, but then again you can't mess those up too much.
I am writing the review I wish I would have read prior to going to this restaurant, hopefully it wards off some unsuspecting victim who has decent taste in BBQ from visiting this place.
My non-California raised friends and I have sadly developed a new way of describing things... whenever we say something is "good" we now have to follow it with "well for California". Lucille's isn't even good by these new handicapped standards.
Editorial Review by Citysearch Editors. Whether dining in or taking it to go, the slow-cooked, smoked meats at this Southern-style spot are well worth the wait--just be sure to save room for the peach cobbler.
