Even a Texan likes this place
by SookieSook
This place was really great. I went with my TN boyfriend and we walked up to the door and almost turned around, but only because the dining area didn't look very comfortable. The guy working there, "Uncle Andre's", nephew, greeted us with a smile so we felt like we had to go in.
We ordered, sat down and waited. The people next to us had their food come out and it looked great.
We got our food and it was really awesome. I had the beef ribs and they were tender and had this great zesty sauce. My boyfriend got the shredded chicken sandwich and then we had coleslaw, collard greens, and mac and cheese. It was fantastic, definitely worth going to.
If you dont like the seating, get it to go, but it's worth getting.
- Pros: Great food, great service, great prices
- Cons: Seating is limited and not the best ambiance
Do NOT go Here for Barbecue

The positive first: The chicken wings were slammin'. Very spicy and the kind of skin that you could eat by itself with no meat. I normally put Tabasco or hot sauce on my chicken, but that only detracted from the flavor in this case. Yes, their chicken is bomb. And the red beans and rice make a nice foil for the tanginess of the chicken. The bbq is terrible. The sauce is way too thick, like it's full of molasses and there isn't enough of it. The meat is supposed to be swimming in the sauce; in this case, the sauce is merely a coating. Oh yeah, it's too sweet and has zero kick whatsoever. A GOOD place will give you the option of mild, medium, and hot. This sauce is one size fits all, and it wasn't very tasty.
I had the combo: The hot link was absolute garbage; and I've never had a hot link I didn't like. I ate one half of it but will probably chuck the other half. It was that bad! The baby backs were merely ok, not good. The meat wasn't tough, but it definitely wasn't falling off the bone. The beef rib had pretty good flavor (the meat) and was nice and tender. But with such a terrible sauce, it was diminished. And that's not to mention that beef ribs do not compare with pork, anyway. The mac and cheese wasn't very good. Ralph's deli has better (it's pretty good, actually). The red beans and rice were decent; I would get those again along with the wings. Popeye's red beans is better, though. They didn't even serve any (has to be white) bread with the 'cue!!! That's like a burger place not serving fries. Also, any place that has neither rib tips nor small ends, isn't a true bbq place, in my opinion. Conversely, a place that serves baby backs is a place to avoid if you like real down home bbq. Uncle Dre's is a place is for people that like Tony Roma's, Lucilles, or Houston's. Oh yeah, they do give you generous portions, though.
The truth be told, there is no good bbq in LA. I've been to Woodys on Slauson, Phillips andTasty Q on Crenshaw, and even the church on Rosecrans and Avalon. Woody's was so bad that I hope the place burns down. I literally threw away their mac n cheese after paying $8 for it. The best place was a spot in Gardena, but I forget it's name. It has a pretty good rep; but even that place wasn't that great. the only good place was Clark's in Ontarion (that was real bbq), but it burnt down. It should have been Woody's! As you can see, I'm psycho when it comes to food. If you go here, get their fried chicken. That was no joke.
- Pros: Clean, friendly service, not terribly expensive.
- Cons: Terrible BBQ and mediocre sides
OK BBQ, slooooow service
by fenris2000
I have gone to this restaurant several times by now. The establishment is tucked away in a small strip mall, is small, and does not accommodate big groups. The place resembles a bit a fast food joint, but lacks the speed of service that is associated with such places. I have had to wait 50 minutes for my order, even though I was told that it would take them 10 minutes when I placed it. I was told that I should call in advance when I complained. The food is tasty, but does not match the quality and taste of some other BBQ spots around the same area.
- Pros: Inexpensive for BBQ
- Cons: Slow service, rude
