cool little bookstore, best duttons, rude staff, big corporations, nice people, cool doors, awesome book store
Best Used bookstore in the valley. ...at least in the early 80s. really nice, knowledgeable staff as well. i recall crossing the boulevard to get into dutton's when some choad in a white mercedes ran into the x-walk and almost clipped me. i turned prepared to howl abuse when i noticed the driver was ray manzarek. do you remember him? of course not, no worries. at the time i thought the doors were cool, so i just nodded pacifically and toddled on my right-of-way. these days however, i would yank him out the window by his hippie hair if for no other reason than to beat some much needed sense and sensibility into him : namely the fact that jim morrison is dead and has remained that way for the past 35 years. get over it, a-clown! nice job making those two x records sound like a hammond wurlitzer demo session, ray, you wetspot!
Old-school bookstore brimming with bestsellers, collector's pieces and more..
In Short
The shelves are laden with bestsellers and classics in all genres: fiction, nonfiction, history, geography, biography, vocational, art, etc. There's also a cache of rare books and first editions. There are attractions for non-bibliophiles as well: Victorian greeting cards, art postcards and calendars, tons of art prints--lithographs, 19th-century Japanese sketches, vintage advertisements from periodicals like Vogue and Life. Service is always helpful, especially when offered by owner Dave Dutton, himself a writer.
Duttons is the BEST!. I'm surprised to see a person say Dutton's has a rude staff. I've been in the Valley for about 10 years and they're the best bookstore I've ever come across. Nice people and, geez, what an abundance of rare, neat, old books. They're the last of the 'old time' shops in L.A. and if they're ever rude to you, I'm sure you had it coming. I sold Mr. Dutton my entire set of Elbert Hubbbard books and he paid me two thousand dollars (more than any other store offered me). God Bless Dutton's Books!
Readers' Paradise. Looking for an obscure title or offbeat author? Try Dutton's. The staff at this shop will probably know where to find it, and can have it delivered in a day or two. Westside book fanatics, don't feel left out, there's a Dutton's in Brentwood too.
