Editorial Review for Rudy's Barber Shop – by Steve Coulter
The Scene
One peek inside and the term "greaser" comes to mind. This industrial-strength garage has been cleverly converted into a stylish barbershop. Rudy's is an original in the trim, style and cut market. The high ceilings and low-impact approach of the layout combine to create a comfortable environment that can be enjoyed while waiting for a turn in one of the many chairs. Once seated, your coif will be clipped as you take in the collage of pop culture posters that cover the walls.
The Goods
The services are clearly painted or posted on the wall, both inside and out, and are delivered with this simple (and comforting) promise: "Cheap Cuts, No Nicks." In addition to all things tonsorial, Rudy's offers a host of services for the young cosmopolitan, including manicures and pedicures. At the counter you will also find a small, eclectic selection of CDs, magazines and beauty products.

Rudy's Santa Monica was a major disappointment after an excellent haircut at the Silver Lake location. I was forced to explain the desired haircut four times before it was even marginally understood, and the resulting haircut was uneven and not well blended b/w the longer top length and the shorter side/back length. Additionally (unlike at Silver Lake), despite being a buzz cut, I was charged $24 rather than $15 because the cut "was two different lengths." Rudy, please ensure consistent quality in your locations and among your employees.
Pros: none
Cons: lack of haircutting skill & grasp of haircut descriptions

I've been here to get highlights and cut, about four times now. Every time I had a different stylist and every time I left very pleased. The staff is friendly, some are hard on the edges but very good people, great personalities. I dress and look nothing like the staff and always feel very welcome.
Pros: walk in
Cons: long wait
