In 1857, R.H. Macy opened his eponymous dry goods store in New York City. The tally of his first day's receipts: $11.06. These days, under the aegis of Federated Department stores, Macy's anchors malls coast to coast, tallying millions in yearly sales.

The Goods
Macy's is every shopper's department store, located along the retail spectrum between Sears and Nordstrom. Crowded displays boast second-tier labels: Lauren and Polo by Ralph Lauren, Reaction by Kenneth Cole, Allen by ABS. The shoe department features many upscale selections: Via Spiga, DKNY and Martinez Valero for the ladies and Cole Haan, Skechers and basic Bass loafers for the fellas. Otherwise, rely on staples: Wamsutta sheets, Royal Velvet towels, Clinique cosmetics, Gold-Toe socks and Carter's for kids.

Always great deals. You've got to get there early, but the selections will be great. Macy's is always a great place for deals and they seem to have them all the time. Just keep an eye open and you'll be sure to save big!

Men's Suits Customer Service poor. The sales people in Men's Suits are pushy and snickery. They joke about customers and arrogant. Go to Santa Anita's Macy's, they offer Nordstrom level customer service. Or just go to Nordstrom if you want a quality suit and Customer Service that doesn't ruin your weekend. Moreover, Santa Anita Mall's Macys has better selection in the Men's Suits section.

Old But Classy. I don't know if it's the building that does it, or the staff, but this is probably my favorite macy's. The others seem like circuses, but this one is always just a little more refined. Selections are great. If you get hungry, walk across the street and eat at one of the many wonderful restaurants. Parking is a pain now, but Hudson always offers free space.
