great store, good price, love macys, good shoes
From a "Miracle on 34th Street" to malls in the 'burbs, this is middle-class America's own department store..
The Scene
In 1857, R.H. Macy opened his eponymous dry goods store in New York City. The tally of his first day's receipts: $11.06. These days, under the aegis of Federated Department stores, Macy's anchors malls coast to coast, tallying millions in yearly sales.
The Goods
Macy's is every shopper's department store, located along the retail spectrum between Sears and Nordstrom. Crowded displays boast second-tier labels: Lauren and Polo by Ralph Lauren, Reaction by Kenneth Cole, Allen by ABS. The shoe department features many upscale selections: Via Spiga, DKNY and Martinez Valero for the ladies and Cole Haan, Skechers and basic Bass loafers for the fellas. Otherwise, rely on staples: Wamsutta sheets, Royal Velvet towels, Clinique cosmetics, Gold-Toe socks and Carter's for kids.
Skip the furniture department.. This is the first time I've ever bought furniture (or much of anything) from Macy's. I found some bookcases that were just the size I was looking for and they were a better price than another set I was preparing to buy from a more expensive store. The salesman was overly aggressive, but they seemed to be a good price so I overlooked it. After I paid, the salesman was checking on the delivery and the department manager let me know they would not be able to deliver them for at least two weeks as they were 'busy with inventory'. This peeved me a bit. I was still unpacking (just moved to the area) and was in desperate need of the storage space. When they did call to schedule delivery, they told me they couldn't deliver on Saturday as they were picking these up from the store and not the warehouse. Why this is my problem, I don't know, but having just started a new job, I could not be home during the week . We made arrangements for them to leave the bookcases in the back yard. This stinks for me, but they would not accomodate my schedule, even after making me wait so long. Imagine my surprise when they were not delivered on the day promised. It took two days and several phone calls by me to find anyone to explain what happened. They made some sort of paperwork error it seems and the bookcases were never picked up from the store. It is now almost two weeks later and still no bookcases, just a lot of promises to call me back. I've called almost every day. Finally today they let me know they'd deliver them next MONTH. And still no Saturday option, despite the salesman's promise he would arrange it. I just want my money back. And will never ever buy from Macy's again. And I'd advise others not to as well. Spend the extra money and deal with professionals who care about their customers.
