Editorial Review for Roof Bar at the Standard Downtown – by Tara de Lis
The Scene
Downtown L.A.'s skyline frames the ultimate outdoor pool and lounge party. Large couches accommodating multiple groups of friends are conveniently located only a huff and puff away from the roomy dance floor. Just around the corner lies the Roof's singular bar. Looking like the set of a White Stripes video, the vibrant candy apple-red bar contrasts with a stark white wall. For more visual stimuli, there's a projector screening epic Tinseltown flicks ("Wizard of Oz") on the wall of an adjacent building. A small pool lined with chaise lounges offers stacks of towels for anyone brave (or drunk) enough to take a dip. This spot is hopping any night of the week with hipsters, in-the-know tourists, and others vying for a turn in one of the vibrating space-pod waterbeds.

The view from this outdoor, rooftop bar still takes my breath away every time I’m there. I love the venue’s red, art deco architecture and couches that recline so far back you can almost lay down. Coupled with the fake grass lawn on one side of the roof, it almost makes that section of the bar feel like a living, breathing Target commercial. The enclosed bed pods over by the pool are one of the venue’s main draws, but they are so popular that’s very hard to snag a seat in them. Drinks run on par with the other downtown nightclubs in the city. Only downsides to this venue is that the dance floor is very small, and that there’s usually a long wait to get on to the rooftop on weekend nights.

I came to L.A for the fabled nightlife and the fabulousness that i see in the tabloids. i found it at the standard. It was a friday night and it was crowded as hell but the bouncer (who happens to be hot as hell) let my friends and i in after about a ten minute wait.. for free mind you. It was great. The drinks were strong as hell but they did take a long time to get. The bartender however was a complete a**hole! He attempted to shame me into giving him a larger tip then called me a b**ch! Besides that a**hole bartender the night was magical. The views of the LA skyline was absolutely breath taking. The waterbeds by the pool were the perfect place for my girls and I to hang by. Everyone seemed to be really friendly but it is definitely an L.A "scene." I saw at least 75 5'11, 60 lbs, blonde-haired big breasted, half dressed chicks. I guess that is LA for you. All and all I definitely recommend this place. It was a magical start to my vacation.
Pros: The beautiful surroundings, the strength of the drinks, the waterbeds
Cons: The bartender! $20 cover, all the skinny broads, all the men looked like they graduated from the handsome boy modeling school
