Editorial Review for Show Pony – by Kim Cooper
In Short
In 2000, when painter Kime Buzzelli opened her art and fashion shop under her apartment, Echo Park was considered kind of scary. But it didn't take long for celebrity stylists to smell out something special in the feathered, beaded, one-of-a-kind gowns and jewelry pieces inspired by fabulous Laurel Canyon hippie chicks, sophisticated flappers and gypsy fortune tellers. A spring 2008 redesign swapped the circus tent clutter of the old store for a minimal elegance, with black beaded chandeliers and hanging pink paper sculptures. Favorite gauzy dress designer Annakim Violette and feather headdress crafter Laura Kranitz are featured, alongside South Paradiso Leather Company's inlaid leather wallets and disco diva-painted jackets, Jenny Dayco's funky necklaces and Emily Katz' hand-painted raw silk tunics.
Hits: There's little danger of showing up at a party wearing the same thing as anyone else when choosing from a selection of one-of-a-kind, usually hand-made apparel.
Misses: The tiny shop has no dressing room, so be prepared to trot down the block to wonderful Flounce Vintage to use the one there.

When to GoIt'll be much too crowded to shop or get a good look at the Show Pony art show, but the block party every first Saturday is a neighborhood must, with live music, free wine and snacks and great people-watching.
