Toys are tops at this Japanese import shop.. In the beginning there was Giant Robot, the magazine. First created in 1994 as the hand-published, black-and-white pet project of two UCLA graduates, the publication has evolved into a glossy Asian pop culture magazine. And now there's Giant Robot, the store, opened in late October 2001 to bring predominantly Japanese imports to fans. While everything in this small store has some connection to Asian culture, the variety is huge and consists mainly of Japanese imports. There are tons of T-shirts--some of them Giant Robot's own--books on art and skateboarding, comic books, toys (check out the Asian equivalent of a Pez dispenser) and stationery featuring Japanese characters and stickers.

Cool, albeit overpriced products, but very rude staff.. Having been in the store on Sunset Blvd., I fell in love with Giant Robot almost immediately. I am inspired by the very hip niche products they carry. The atmosphere is fun, and the salespeople friendly.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to check out the GR on Sawtelle. Wow, was I let down. We shopped around for about ten minutes. My friend very nicely asked if there was a restroom she could use. The sales person said no. My friend inquired if there was perhaps a public bathroom in a nearby establishment. The sales person, in a very unkind tone said that she didn't know, because she had never had to use one.

Sort of shocking, considering that all we did was very nicely ask about a bathroom. After about five minutes more of browsing the shop, I asked the same salesperson where the other store was located. "Isn't it on La Cienega?" I (incorrectly) inquired. She simply shook her head no and stared at me as if I were interrupting her soap opera.

Disappointed, we left immediately. I won't be going back.

Asian Fun With a Trendy Twist. Spawned from the popular Asian-American pop culture 'zine of the same name, the Giant Robot store and it sister shop/gallery down the street, GR2 are always full of twisted toys, geeky guilty pleasures (Asian candy, vegan marshmallows), trendy art books, cutting edge comics and t-shirts. A trip to GR never fails to amuse and entice me to spend lots of money on gifts for myself or my friends.
