Editorial Review for Supper – by Dana Bowen
The Scene
Diners flock here for Italian comfort food, shabby-chic decor and a mellow East Village crowd. The double-sided, two-storied space begins with a bar-wrapped open kitchen and proceeds from one cozy, candlelit nook to the next. A brick-walled back room with farmhouse tables seats large parties, while subterranean pillow-strewn banquettes appeal to romantics. Unfortunately, stiff hosts and indifferent servers can crush the feel-good vibe.
The Food
Chef-owner Frank Prisinazo's fresh, rustic fare satisfies the soul and the wallet. Start with addictive chicken liver or cheesy stracchino crostini on chewy Sullivan Street bread. Homemade pastas with meaty bolognese or wild-mushroom ragu are simple pleasures, but weekly rotating too-soft risottos, such as sweet pear-Gorgonzola, are hit-or-miss. Favorites include moist, herb-stuffed whole fish and oven-roasted pork loin with crispy potatoes and mixed greens. Skip the pedestrian cheese plate and end the evening with chocolate-doused hazelnut panna cotta instead.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoSupper only takes reservations for parties of 10 or more. The velvet-draped, tin-ceiling bar, therefore, is the most popular spot in the house. Get on the list and grab a glass of wine.
Look GoodIn addition to a dozen inexpensive wines by the glass, 10 bottles are sold "by consumption," which means if you drink one glass, you only pay a fourth of the bottle price.

Supper is a real treat in a neighborhood where service has gone to s@#$ . The staff are soo nice and the food is soo good. I can't say enough good things about this place. I've taken many new New Yorkers there and they fall in love and they take THEIR friends. The polenta is amazing, the brunches are incredible (the French toast is to die for) I have all my birthdays and get-togethers at Supper and each time they treat me and my friends better than the last. Enjoy a little Supper anytime.
Cons: The only drawbacks are it is hard to get a table at night sometimes

I have been eating at Supper very regularly since I moved to New York 5 years ago as I live in the area. So.. they don't take reservations - if you're having a big group of people out for a birthday - be decent and book somewhere else for your friend instead of being a cheap a@s and then complaining about waiting on a Saturday night in the East Village as one of the reviewers below states. Who goes out in Manhattan with a large group on a Saturday night for a special occasion without a reservation?? Duh!!! The bar next door is small, but if you are being served by the great gorgeous bartender Wade, you'll get a drink quickly and topped up regularly and you will be totally taken care of. The back-room is a little quieter but as for your chair being kicked as people go past to the toilets (as per another whiney reviewer..) the table for 2 (which I have sat at many times is in front of no more than 4 other chairs - so that's hardly the stomping crowd they mention. Michael and the other hosts are organised and just doing their job and have always been wonderful to me and my crew. The food is always fantastic and plenty of it - I always leave with a doggy bag. Service? What do you want guys? The place is busy, extremely reasonable - the waitstaff are there to take your orders quickly, get your food to you and if it's very busy, they often ask if it's OK to bring the check, so as for waiting for a check... purrrlease!!! The weeknights are definitely less crowded but the food and service is consistent 7 days a week. The downside of the weekends is that the WHINEY, COLLEGE BRIDGE AND TUNNEL KIDS are around. If you don't want a piece of Manhattan, stay in Bayridge so the rest of us can enjoy this great East Village restaurant.
Pros: Great service, Great food, Great value
Cons: Bridge & Tunnel Crowds Friday and Saturday nights
