Editorial Review for The Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden – by Erika Dykstra

In Short
A leisurely, self-guided tour of the garden and memorial will take about an hour. Nowadays, the botanical garden is dedicated to spotlighting plants that grow exclusively on California islands; many of these rare plants are on the endangered species list. Wander up the memorial's many stairs--your visit will climax with the landscape view from the top of the memorial. One-and-a-half miles from Avalon's town center, the view of the harbor is exceptional.

Insider Tips

When to Go

The view of Avalon bay is superior in the afternoon, after the marine layer has burned off. But morning visitors benefit from the cooler temperatures--the walk up to the memorial can be overwhelming when you're baking under the afternoon sun.

Know Before You Go

The memorial and botanical garden is one of Avalon's few attractions too far to reach on foot, and the uphill road is too steep for a casual bike ride. Opt for a golf cart, cab or the public bus.

I went on this tour as a land excursion offering from a cruise I took. The bus ride going up the very steep and narrow hill was very scary for someone like me who is afraid of heights. But once we got to the top it was fine. The tour provides some interesting history of the island but the gardens itself aren't fabulous. I've seen way better. If you have plenty of time, it's worth taking a little time to visit...but if you're pressed for time, this tour is something you can definitely skip and not miss out on too much.

Pros: Provides history of the island

Cons: Getting up the narrow and steep hill
