Tips for Baracoa Cuban Cafe

Authentic Cuban eats in Atwater.. Comfy booths line walls adorned with murals of the island as fans spin overhead and Cuban music wafts from the speakers. Beyond a single table on the sidewalk, the small setup inside is fairly simple, but in the evenings, low lighting and jar candles flickering atop the sturdy wooden tables create a warm feel. You get a lot of bang for your buck in this unassuming spot, with big portions, reasonable prices and plenty of tasty options. On the menu, you’ll find pressed Cuban sandwiches with different combinations of roasted pork, ham and steak made with traditional toppings like Swiss cheese, pickles, grilled onions and mojo sauce. A selection of steaks and chops includes a New York strip, pan-fried liver and onions, and baby back ribs slow-roasted for eight hours. As far as chicken, the popular arroz con pollo (chicken and rice) tends to sell out fairly quickly. You’ll also find several fish options, including light, flavorful tilapia, topped with either tomatoes and garlic or blackened with Cajun seasoning (opt for the former—you won’t be disappointed). Special family recipes that have been passed down since 1969 include ropa vieja (shredded beef) and picadillo, a flavor-packed combination of ground beef, onions and peppers braised in a tomato sauce. Most entrees are served up with a mountain of black beans and rice, while some also come with a side of fried plantains. To drink, there’s beer, wine and sangria.

Decent but not spectacular. The arroz con pollo is really good here but a lot of the dishes are just decent. At least the prices are very reasonable and they have cuban pressed sandwiches as well.
