POOM THAI -- GONE BAD.
Poom Thai used to be good, I'll give 'em that.
Family-run, tasty well-prepared food -- but unfortunately, no more.
I haven't been for months, took a friend tonight, our entrees were barely edible, and resembled no other Thai food I've ever encountered, especially at Poom Thai itself.
The barbecue ribs, were so dry and tough we could barely cut them with a knife, and decorated with a splotch of from-the-jar barbeque sauce.
The last time I ate ribs there a year ago, they were juicy, succulent and tasty -- and no relation to what we were served tonight.
The Pad Thai was barely recognizable as that: no ground peanuts, and a tomato sauce slopped on noodles and bean spouts.
I tried to talk to both the waiter and the manager -- asking what had happened to the restaurant.
They claimed it was the same "chef" -- but every other time I'd been there the cook was Asian, and usually a family member.
As were the manager and waiter: I didn't recognize either the waiter or the manager, and the cooks were Hispanic.
When I tried to talk to the manager about the quality decline in the entrees, he just said, "Go to another restaurant"!
I will -- but I wish I could return to the Poom Thai of last year.
It's good, basic Thai food at decent prices. Not fusion, americanized or over-priced like most spots in Venice and Santa Monica. It's family run. I've never had a problem with service while dining-in. The delivery is always fast and accurate.
I don't know what the problem is with these people who gave the last two reviews... then again, I don't expect much from people who can't take the time to correctly spell the word REALLY. RELI? What is that text spelling for thirteen-year-olds?
They've got a wall you can sign, cool fish tanks, consistent and delicious food. I recommend the Pad Thai and Pad-See-Ew.
Worst service, below standard food!. I used to live around this neighborhood. This is the closet thai restaurant to where I lived, so I ordered a lot of take-out from here. Yet, the food is always below average, and service was reli bad. Staff was not concerned about customers at all! Try to avoid this place for sure. Not even a medicore place to dine in.
Worst dining experience... EVER. This evening, my boyfriend and I went to Poom Thai for dinner. He ordered the BBQ Chicken, being somewhat new to Thai cuisine. I ordered the old standby, Pad Thai. It might have been awful, it might have been amazing. I don't know... because, they never cooked my meal. They brought my boyfriend his chicken - still pink, by the by - and I sat. And sat. And sat. After twenty minutes, my boyfriend full from eating and plate pushed away, I asked the waitress about the status of my order. She told me, it's coming right up. Flash forward another ten minutes, I asked her to cancel the order. Fine. No problem. "No Pad Thai," she yells to the cooks who aren't cooking. Great... No sooner had the words come from my mouth, she was at our table, dropping off the check. Having been a waitress many times over, this appauled and angered me. No apology. No offer to take money off the check. Nada. For the first time in my life, I didn't leave a tip.
The best thai food I have ever had!. I eat thai food alot and so I think that I am a good judge. Poom is unique in so many ways. It's small with only 6-8 tables. The kitchen is out in the front so you will see the small staff cooking everything. The food is deliscious always. You will never be dissapointed. I suggest the Nam Prik Pow - the sauce is spicy and sweet at the same time. It comes with large, succulent shrimp. I also suggest the green curry and the won ton soup - not your typical won ton soup I might add. At Poom there is no substitution for quality. It is family run and you will always be served promptly. Prices are so reasonable and the menu is extensive. Be sure to sign your name on the yellow walls. They are covered with writing from other pleased customers who I'm sure have now become regulars.
Good food. Some of the better Thai food I've had, although the ambiance is nill. Usually I've gotten the curries and been quite pleased. It's basically a take-out place with a few seats. There's only street parking. Customer service has been adequate. I would return.
Worst Customer Service!.
We were regular customers for 2 years at Poom thai. In that time we ordered take out almost everyweek because of proximity to our home. Sometimes we dined in but the place has more fish tanks than people in the little restaurant so we mostly did take out. The food was good, spicy and cheap.
One day we ordered food but they mixed up our order. Being a permanent customer, I thought they would gladly fix the mixed up order. But they asked us to bring the food back in order to fix it. That was a bit strange because we had already used up some rice. We brought the food back but they complained that food was half used and basically were rude to us. Then they made the new food so spicy that we could not eat a bite! Its like they were trying to get back at us for bringing back half of the food. I mean we eat a lot of spicy food so we can really handle spicy food but this had so much chili that there was no taste left and no one could eat it. When we asked them "why it was so spicy? " They simply ignored us and did not care. This happened over 3 days so it wasnt a isolated incident. We were not expecting such a bad customer service after being regular customers for 2 years.
We didnt say anything to Poom thai and decided to never visit the restaurant again. If they care more about few pennies than a regular customer, then its best to avoid such a place. We would not recommend going there. There are many other good Thai restaurants in Santa Monica so visit them and avoid this place.
